Make Cosmetics

You can make cosmetics to save some money and create personalized products that are just right for you. It's easy to get started with items that are readily available, and it doesn't take a lot of time or special equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine what kind of cosmetics you want to make. Bath products, skincare products and makeup are some of the choices.

2. Decide what you want the cosmetics to do. Gear your cosmetics to specific skin conditions, like dry or oily skin.

3. Look for recipes online or in books. Use alternatives to some natural products that can decompose or become unstable in water. Once you get started making basic items, you can experiment with your own combinations.

4. Gather the basic ingredients, like distilled water, thickeners, preservatives, emollients and conditioners. Purchase some of these at local health stores or even grocery stores, or you can order kits online.

5. Purchase equipment. You don't need a lot of expensive equipment, but you'll need beakers, spatulas, containers for your product, mixers, a mortar and pestle, and molds for items like lipsticks and soaps.

6. Get special ingredients, like vitamins, exfoliants and herbal products that work with the skincare products you want to make. For makeup, you'll need micas and coloring products. Use natural products, like infused calendula petals, as a tint.

7. Add natural oils or cosmetic-grade fragrance oil blends to your cosmetics to make them smell wonderful.
