Properly Break A Daniel Fast

Breaking a fast requires willpower.

The Daniel Fast is a spiritual fast undertaken mostly by Christians who would like to improve their health and feel more connected to God. Christ Web credits the Daniel Fast with "re-evaluating your life, identifying with those who are poor, losing weight, worshipping God, breaking bad habits, growing closer to God, family and friends, learning self-control, purifying body and soul, and repenting of sin." This fast involves eating only fruits, vegetables and whole grains for an extended amount of time. As with any fast, you must be very careful as you break the fast and begin acclimating your body to other substances.

Instructions

1. Decide how many days you will transition out of the fast, depending on how many days you were on it. Many people do this fast for 21 days. The longer you were on the fast, the longer you will need to take to transition out of it. If you fasted for 21 days, allow yourself five days to break your fast. If you fasted for fewer days, you may only need three or four days to break it. If you begin eating other foods right away, it could have harmful effects on your health.

2. Introduce small amounts of bread into your diet.

Introduce breads, meat and other previously restricted foods back into your diet in small portions. You may want to only introduce one food group at a time as your body will be extra-sensitive to these foods and beverages. Chew your food slowly, listen carefully to your body, and be certain to watch the size of your portions.

3. Drink lots of water.

Drink more water than you regularly would. This will also help you feel full and prevent you from bingeing on food while you break your fast.

4. Add fresh juice into your diet. Use organic juices with no preservatives and additives. If you do not own a juicer, you can visit a health food store or restaurant that prepares freshly squeezed juices.

5. You might be extra-sensitive to caffeine after a fast.

Wait at least five days to introduce caffeine and alcohol back into your system, if you choose to, in very small amounts. Your body will be very sensitive to these products, and their effects may feel exaggerated to you. Both of these substances will dehydrate you so drink extra water when you use them.

6. Recognize the way that your body feels and how it reacts to different types of foods. One benefit of doing a fast is that it provides your body with a clean slate as you have gone through a detoxification process and eliminated harmful chemicals from your body. After doing a fast, some people find that they are allergic to certain foods or that they do not feel the need to use caffeine or alcohol any longer.
