Ripen Fruits & Vegetables

Ripen your fruits and veggies at home.


Whether you're pulling them from the plant or bringing them home from the store, ripening fruits and vegetables at home isn't difficult. In fact, all that you need is some time and patience. When you have fruits and vegetables that are too firm to eat yet, ripening them yourself provides better texture and flavor. Ripening fruits and vegetables at home is ideal for eating them fresh and adding them to a myriad of dishes. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


From the Plant


1. Snip the fruit or vegetable from the plant of your choice when it is still firm or green. Cut a little bit of the plant stem at an angle, leaving some of it on the fruit or vegetable. Cut at a knuckled point on the plant to promote regrowth.


2. Place the fruits and vegetables that you've cut into a large paper grocery sack. The grocery sack prevents light from hitting the vegetables or fruits.


3. Place the bag somewhere dry for up to a week, checking the fruits or vegetables every three days to ensure they aren't rotting.


Produce


4. Place an assortment of fruits or vegetables of your choice into a paper sack.


5. Sit the sack on your kitchen counter.


6. Check the sack after four days. Squeeze softly to check if the fruit or vegetable has tendered. If it is at the desired consistency, remove the fruit or vegetable from the sack. Otherwise, leave it in the bag for two days at a time until it's at the desired firmness and ripeness.
