Beaufort County North Carolina Schools

Beaufort County, North Carolina is a diverse and culturally rich area stationed between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. The county is known for its exceptional outdoor beauty, including sea islands, pristine beaches and warm climate. As of February 2011, the school district had over 14 schools, including four high schools and one technical center.


Primary and Middle Schools


Beaufort County has one middle school and two primary schools in its county limits. The two middle schools include P.S. Jones and Chocowinity Middle School. The only primary school in the area is Chocowinity Primary School, which is situated just south of the Pamlico River in Chocowinity, North Carolina. The average enrollment size each year at the primary school is approximately 590 students from pre-kindergarten and fourth grade, which is supported by a staff of 95 adults. Often times, students in the area continue their education at Chocowinity Middle School for grades five through eight.


Elementary Schools


Beaufort County has six elementary schools in the area. John Small is the newest elementary school in the county with its construction finished in May 2008. As of February 2011, the school had nearly 625 students in grades four and five residing in or around Washington, North Carolina. John Small is a single building elementary divided into three wings with a grassy area for recreation. Other elementary schools in the district include Bath, Eastern, John Cotten Tayloe, Northeast and S.W. Swoden.


High Schools


The district has a total of four high schools, which include Northside, Southside and Washington. Northside High School, "Home of the Panthers," is located in Pinetown, North Carolina. Northside is an example school, which is characterized by its liberal open door policy where students are encouraged to approach their teachers, staff and principal about educational and personal issues. Students are exposed to a full range of extracurricular activities, including after-school sports and cheer leading. The fourth high school in the county is actually a college prep school.


College Preparatory Schools


Beaufort County Early College High School is a college preparatory school for students who want to focus on continuing their education by attending a college or university. The school is located in Building #10 on the Beaufort County Community College Campus in Washington, North Carolina. Students get a jump start on the college lifestyle by attending class on a college campus. Each student must apply to attend this school and applications are available online or at the school. It must be submitted to the principal no later than mid-March each year.
