List Of Foods Eligible For Food Stamp Redemption

MIlk, bread and cheese are all eligible for food stamp redemption.

The United States food stamp program, which is officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is available to low-income individuals and families that meet certain economic-based criteria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture administers SNAP at the federal level through its Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) division, according to its website, while state agencies maintain responsibility for determining eligibility and allotments and distributing the benefits. Only certain food items are eligible for compensation through the program. For example, the purchase of hot foods, alcohol, non-food items and vitamins is not compensated.

Dairy Products

All dairy products are eligible for redemption through the food stamp program in the United States. More specifically, items including eggs, milk and all forms of cheese (cottage, cream, individually-wrapped slices and canned, jarred and spray cheese, to name a few) are considered household food items and are, therefore, part of the SNAP food list.

Meats

All uncooked meats, including steak, ground beef, chicken and seafood are eligible for food stamp redemption, whether fresh or already frozen. Deli meat cold cuts are also acceptable. However, The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, precludes "hot food and any food sold for on-premises consumption" from being purchased with SNAP benefits. This can include certain items that are often sold at deli counters, like rotisserie chicken and ready-to-eat pasta and potato dish meals.

Breads & Packaged Goods

All packaged foods, either in a can or bag, that are strictly food items are eligible. This includes cookies, cereal, ice cream, carbonated drinks, bottled water, canned vegetables and bakery items, to name a few items. Breads, located both on the regular grocery shelves and in the bakery department of grocery stores and food outlets are also eligible.

Grow Your Own

The SNAP benefits extend to the purchase of seeds and plants intended for the production of various kinds of foods for the household. Individuals can use food stamps to buy seeds for their home gardens in order to grown tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and other common vegetables and fruits.
