Plant food is manufactured by various companies to promote the health and growth of garden plants. These "foods" are a mixture of chemicals, including fertilizers and minerals, that work together to provide extra nutrients to your plants. Nitrogen
Three minerals are almost universally found in commercial plant foods: Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Nitrogen promotes the development of foliage, making it look thicker and greener.
Potassium
Potassium promotes the plant's immune system and creates bigger fruits. Extra potassium will help plants resist diseases and other conditions they may be prone to in a garden environment.
Phosphorous
Phosphorous will solidify the roots so plants can survive water shortages and take in more nutrition through the soil.
Fertilizer
Fertilizers are often intermixed with the plant food and provide extra nutrients to the plants. These fertilizers may include fish meal, organic plant and animal matter, natural manures and mulches.
