1. Look online. Many brick and mortar stores have websites. Buying online can save you money by allowing you to buy in bulk. If possible, check out the supplies in person at a local store first. Some websites have multiple pictures that will allow you to get a closeup look from all angles. Many supply stores will allow you choose low cost shipping options that can save you even more money. Check company websites several times a week in order to see if there are any sales that day.
2. Consider purchasing secondhand items. "Secondhand" need not imply lesser quality. A bakery can go out of business and need to liquidate items in good working order. If possible, check out the item in person. Take a close look at the items in question. Pans should not be dented. Pastry bags should not be discolored. All food items should be unopened. Any expiration dates should not have passed. Avoid items that look bent or otherwise have flaws. You may not be able to remove such kinks, rendering the item difficult to use.
3. Look for discontinued stock. Sometimes companies discontinue using certain specific lines of products. A product may be discontinued for many reasons, including failure to sell, an "improved" model was issued or the company simply went out of business in a bad economy. Most discontinued products still work well.
