Homemade Countertop Compost Bins

Countertop compost bins are attractive units that allow you to save food scraps before you carry them to the outdoor compost. These containers can be costly, particularly for someone who is on a strict budget. An empty recycled plastic pail with a handle is a less expensive alternative to ceramic and stainless-steel compost containers for the home. A homemade countertop compost bin project can be completed in an afternoon. Children can help with this recycling project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean an empty plastic ice cream pail, laundry or kitty litter container with dishwashing liquid and hot water. Let the container dry thoroughly.

2. Paint the outside of the container and lid with spray or acrylic paint. The paint should be compatible with plastic.

3. Decorate the container to match the kitchen decor with painted details or adhesive-backed decals.

4. Drill or make aeration holes in the lid of the plastic container with a drill or by pounding a nail through the material. Make a ring of holes around the center of the lid.

5. Glue a carbon filter into the top of the interior of the lid. The filters are available through compost supply sales. Use zip ties as an alternative for glue. Thread the ends of two zip ties through the punched holes in the top of the lid. Wrap them around the filter and secure it in place.
