Soul food
derives primarily from the southern United States, featuring recipes particularly popular among African-American communities. Soul food cuisine generally includes fried meats, especially pork, seafood and chicken, as well as a sampling of vegetables like okra and sweet potatoes. African-Americans comprise more than 40 percent of Philadelphia's population. As a result, the city features its share of soul food restaurants.
Elena's Soul Lounge
Elena's Soul Lounge is in Philadelphia's Cedar Park neighborhood. Housed within a three-story brownstone building, the lounge features a relaxed interior complete with a stage for live musical performances. The menu includes such items as pork chops, hamburgers and fried shrimp, served alongside such side samplings as collard greens, candied yams and macaroni and cheese. Drinks include various beers, martinis and mixed drinks. The restaurant offers take-out service as well.

Situated in Universal City, Fatou & Fama offers an unusual mixture of soul food, West African and West Indian cuisine. Soul food samplings include such standard dishes as southern fried chicken, fried catfish and grilled tilapia. Soul food platters come with two side orders, including fried plantains, black eyed peas and corn bread. Guests dine in a sleek and modern setting, outfitted with recessed lighting and white cloth-covered tables. The restaurant also features on and off-site catering services.

Warmdaddy's is along the Delaware River, in Philadelphia's Pennsport neighborhood. The dining hall has a casual environment, outfitted with exposed brick walls, neon signs and a stage for live music acts.
