Kinds Of Peanut Butter

Different types of peanut butter contain different amounts of peanuts.

No one knows exactly who invented peanut butter, but in 1903, Dr. Ambrose Straub created a machine that made peanut butter. Today peanut butter is inexpensive, easy to eat and nutritious. Many children enjoy peanut butter for lunches, and it conveniently does not require refrigeration. According to Beginner Triathlete, peanut butter satisfies hunger, contains fiber, protein, and other nutrients that may reduce heart disease and diabetes. There are several types of peanut butter, and their shelf life varies. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Natural Peanut Butter

Natural peanut butter contains 100 percent peanuts, but they are not required to be grown organically. It does not contain hydrogenated oil and often separates when stored. It keeps best in the refrigerator. Some supermarkets carry natural peanut butter, but it is also found in gourmet markets and health food stores.

Traditional Peanut Butter

Standard peanut butter is sold in almost any market or convenience store. It is usually available in chunky or smooth textures. According to Prepared Pantry, the government requires it to contain a minimum of 90 percent peanuts. Peanut butter must also be prepared without "preservatives, sweeteners and artificial colors". Sometimes it contains hydrogenated oil, which helps keep oil and peanut butter from separating. Standard peanut butter will last for half a year once it is opened.

Organic Peanut Butter

Organic foods must contain at least 70 percent organic ingredinents to comply with government standards. This means that the majority of ingredients cannot be exposed to pesticides and chemicals. The crops are inspected regularly and must also be cultivated on land that has not been exposed to chemicals for a specified time period. Organic peanut butter is sold in health food stores and some markets.

Reduced Fat Varieties

Reduced fat peanut butter varieties are really peanut butter spreads. They usually contain 60 percent peanuts, but according to Mens Health, the fewer calories may also contain fewer nutrients. Reduced fat peanut butter is available in chunky and smooth consistencies.
