Types Of Christian Fasting

Prayer is an important element of fasting.

Fasting was a widely respected discipline in both the Old and New Testaments. It is widely recorded that many important figures in the Bible fasted and gained spiritual growth through the process. Moses, Jesus, Paul and Daniel have all been documented as completing this process. Fasting is a means of humbling one self in front of God. King David stated, "I humble myself through fasting." Christians do not fast as a means of self-punishment or to pay for their sins. Christians fast so they can become closer to God through prayer and cleansing. There are different types of fasts Christians can choose, all of them used to demonstrate devotion to God.

Partial Fast

This particular fast was mentioned in the book of Daniel. Daniel abstained from "delicacies" for a three-week period, "In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled." A Christian wishing to fast in this fashion can abstain from meat, wine, bread, soda or any other food that is highly enjoyed. The fast is about making a sacrifice.

Normal Fasting

This is a strict fast that allows the person committed to only consume water. No food is allowed during the fasting period. This is very dangerous and you must seek medical approval to ensure you are healthy enough to partake in this activity. It is not recommended that you do this fast if you are on medication or have a physical ailment.

Absolute Fasting

An absolute fast is normally associated with Jesus Christ. When he went into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights it is believed he went without food or water. This is a supernatural feat and should not be attempted without a doctor's consent. Paul is also recorded as taking on this fast for three days during his Damascus Road experience. If you decide to do this fast, do it for a short period of time to ensure health and well-being.

Non-Food Fasting

Fasting doesn't need to be strictly about food or water. Christians can also show their devotion and faith through a non-food fast. They can decide to stop an enjoyable activity such as watching TV, listening to music, playing video games, going to the movies or eating out. Remember, fasting is about bringing yourself closer to God. Instead of doing those particular activities you could spend that time in prayer. Remind yourself that this is not a punishment but rather a spiritual journey you are taking to solidify your faith.
