Prevent Stains On A Dry Erase Board

Remove markings from the board regularly to prevent staining.

A dry erase board allows for easy, visual communication, but the use of markers as writing tools means that the surface of the board stains easily if not properly cared for. Dry erase boards come in two types: magnetic and melamine. Magnetic boards are made of porcelain-covered steel, making them more resistant to ink stains and longer-lasting in general. You can buy melamine boards for much lower prices than magnetic boards, but the clear coating on the board wears out quickly, leaving it more prone to stains. Regardless of the type, you can do a few things to prevent stains on dry erase boards. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the dry erase surface prior to writing on it. Erase any leftover marker with a cloth or felt eraser before dampening a clean cloth with water and wiping the board clean. Dry the board with another clean cloth.

2. Erase the marker from the board as soon as you are done using it. Switch out an old eraser for a new one once it becomes overly dirty. Wait for the marker ink to dry completely on the surface of the board before erasing it. Avoid leaving the marker to sit on the board for longer than a day, unless the board is used to convey unchanging information, such as a restaurant menu.

3. Clean the dry erase board again at the end of the day with both the eraser and damp cloth. Wipe any slight staining or ghosting vigorously until the marking is removed.

4. Repeat the cleaning procedure daily, or whenever the dry erase board is used. Rinse the board at least once every 2 to 3 days if daily cleaning is unfeasible due to time constraints.

5. Clean the board with a specialized dry erase board cleaner if staining becomes a problem despite the cleaning routine. If the specialized cleaner does not work, add a small amount of rubbing alcohol or fingernail polish to a cloth and wipe the ghosted area with quick, small strokes. Avoid touching the chemicals to the board for extended durations. Clean the board with a dampened cloth after the application of chemical cleaners to remove any residue.
