Tell If Eggs Are Expired

Test your eggs for freshness before using them in a recipe.

Eggs can be cooked in a wide variety of ways, from scrambled to fried to omelet-style with a mixture of other ingredients. In addition to being versatile, eggs can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Eating contaminated or expired eggs can result in salmonella or other dangerous diseases. Along with checking the sell-by date on a carton, there are other ways to determine if the eggs in your refrigerator are worth eating. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Fill a large bowl with water.

2. Place the eggs in question into the bowl.

3. Watch the action of the eggs. If an egg falls to the bottom of the bowl and turns sideways, it is fresh. Eggs that stand upright, with the bottom touching the bottom of the bowl, are still fresh enough to eat. If the egg does not touch the bottom of the bowl, however, you should get rid of it. Expired eggs will also feel lighter than their fresh counterparts.
