Make Lip Balm / Lip Gloss

Homemade lip balm is a safe and soothing way to relieve chapped lips.

Overexposure to the sun, or dry air, can potentially damage the delicate skin on your lips. This can lead to cracking and even bleeding if the damage is severe enough. You can repair this damage by using a moisturizing lip balm that is prepared in the comfort your kitchen. Couple the balm with a shiny homemade gloss that will show off your moisturized lips. Both recipes benefit from cosmetic-grade essential oils that are healing and add a pleasant scent. Specialty natural ingredients, such as mica and beeswax, are purchased in bulk online or through a local store that carries natural products. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Lip Balm

1. Place 1 tsp. beeswax, 1 1/2 tsp. coconut butter and 1/2 tsp. palm oil in a small pot. Place the pot on low heat. Heat the ingredients until they are melted.

2. Let the mixture cool slightly. While it is still warm, add essential oils and vitamin E. Almond and avocado oils are good moisturizing agents. But choose which oils suit your tastes.

3. Cut off the pointed tip of a pointed paper cup. This will create a funnel so you can pour the balm into a small container without spills.

4. Place the pointed paper cup over your storage container with the pointed end inside the container. Pour the balm into the container while it is still in a warm liquid state. Let the container cool at room temperature. The ingredients will hardened and take on a balm consistency.

5. Apply the balm with your finger.

Lip Gloss

6. Melt 1 tsp. of beeswax in a small pot over the stove. You can also melt a small amount of beeswax in a plastic measuring cup inside the microwave. Melt with low heat for a few seconds.

7. Stir in jojoba oil while the beeswax is still warm. Add other essential oils, such as lavender or aloe vera oil.

8. Stir in 10 drops of red food coloring or your choice of mica. Mica is a natural mineral color pigment that adds iridescence as wells as color.

9. Store lip gloss in a small glass container. Cool at room temperature. Apply the gloss with a cosmetic lip brush.
