Make One Serving Of Oatmeal In A Microwave

Oatmeal is a convenient microwave meal.

Health experts stress the importance of breakfast to boost your metabolism and prevent energy drain later in the day. To start your day off right, try a bowl of hot oatmeal. Low in calories and high in nutrition, this grain provides an inexpensive breakfast for those in a rush. Less than 150 calories per serving, oatmeal is a good choice for dieters and the health-conscious alike. The American Heart Association recommends six to eight servings of grains a day, and oatmeal is a good choice to meet that requirement. However, be careful when selecting flavored oatmeal, which contains sugar and added flavorings.

Instructions

1. Start your day with healthy grains.

Empty a packet of dry oatmeal, or about a 1/2 cup of bulk oats, in a microwavable bowl. Add a pinch of salt for taste, if desired.

2. Stir in 1/2 to 1 cup water or milk to moisten. Milk makes for a richer, creamier oatmeal and increases calcium, but it adds extra calories. More liquid thins the meal; less makes for a thicker porridge.

3. Dried fruits are an excellent topping.

Put the bowl in a microwave oven -- do not cover -- and cook 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high. When the time is up, remove the bowl from the microwave; take care, the bowl may be hot. Stir. Add fruits, nuts or other toppings. You may also pour extra milk over the porridge for a wetter cereal.
