Colored sugars
add sparkle to iced cookies.
Colored sugars work well for decorating cupcakes, cookies, cakes and many other baked desserts. However, purchasing a small package of colored sugar from your grocer can cost as much as a couple pounds of white sugar. Rather than spending a small fortune, purchase food coloring and make your own colored sugar. You can color an entire bag of sugar without spending more than a few dollars. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Pour the amount of sugar you would like to color into a glass bowl. Do not make more sugar than what is required for your recipe unless you have an airtight container to store it in.
2. Add one drop of food coloring in your chosen hue to the center of the bowl of sugar.
3. Whisk the food coloring into the sugar quickly until it is an even tone throughout, or for about one minute.
4. Add additional drops of food coloring, one at a time, until the sugar is the shade you desire. Always whisk the sugar immediately after adding the food coloring to prevent it from clumping up.
5. Pour any colored sugar you will not use immediately into a clean, dry airtight container. Store the container in a cool, dark cupboard.
