Language immersion programs for high school students are abundant
If you're interested in gaining conversational proficiency in a foreign language quickly, nothing is better than traveling to the country itself and being immersed in the language and culture. High school students on summer break can easily find a number of language immersion programs located anywhere in the world; programs are available for just about any language.
China Summer Camp
High school students interested in learning Chinese might consider Mandarin Rocks' language immersion program. The Mandarin Rocks summer camp brings students from all around the world to Shanghai, one of China's safest and most bustling metropolises. According to High School Programs, the Mandarin Rocks summer camp includes a number of events that will help a high school student's proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. While students will attend 20 Chinese lessons each week, leisure time is plenty; four times per week, students will enjoy activities such as ice skating, live shows, Chinese painting and others. The weekends include tours of the nearby cities of Nanjing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Zhouzhuang and Qibao. As of February 2010, rates for the Mandarin Rocks summer camp range between $1,850 and $4,470, depending on the length of the stay (two to six weeks). Room and board, tuition and study materials are included in the price of the course. It is important to note that airfare is not included.
Japanese Immersion Program
LanguBridge Education Centre offers a Japanese immersion program centered in Tokyo. The course offers a mix between classroom learning and activities that increase the student's proficiency in Japanese. High School Programs highlights the fact that trips to various locations are included in the immersion program itself, helping students understand the culture of Japan. Depending on personal preference, students have the option of either staying at a dormitory or with a host family. The duration of the course is very flexible; students can decide to stay for as little as three weeks, or as long as seven weeks. As of February 2010, rates begin at $2,685 for the three-week program, and includes tuition, textbooks, room and board, class outings and medical insurance. Airfare is not included in the cost of the course.
Summer Study and Homestay in Spain
Andeo-International Homestays offers a summer language immersion program for high school students interested in gaining proficiency in Spanish. According to High School Programs, the program takes place in the Southeastern Spain city of Tarragona, and includes a number of classes and activities to help students master the Spanish language. High School Programs notes that the Andeo-International program includes 15 hours of classroom study each week, along with a number of excursions to Barcelona, nearby Roman ruins, and so on. As of February 2010, the Homestay program in Spain costs $2,120 for a two-week period. Students can stay longer than the standard course length at a cost of $760 per week. The cost of the program covers tuition, room and board, medical insurance and excursions with the class. As with the other programs, airfare is not included.
