Business Considerations

1. Be sure that the legal end of the business is taken care of before you begin growing vegetables for market. Create a business plan first, as even the smallest businesses need a plan a tool for success. Perform the market research to know who your customers are and what they want.

Name the business and obtain any licenses and permits necessary.

2. Sell vegetables as plants by growing them in the planters they will be sold in. Be sure that the planters are big enough to hold well established plants, in case they take a while to sell. Use a 1:1 ratio of potting soil and compost in these containers and then plant the seeds and water. Use a marker to identify each plant.

Grow vegetables in the ground or in containers if you will pick them before selling. Plot the area where the plants will grow in the ground. Use a spade to dig about 1 foot into the ground. Mix compost with the dirt from the garden and even the soil out. Plant seeds and water the area well.

Have crates or baskets available for placing the vegetables into once they are picked and ready to sell. Create a small sign for each crate or basket, with the name of the plant and the price.

3. Grow vegetables organically, as many of your customers will appreciate that you care about what they consume. Use organic soils and composts and fertilizers will not be necessary. Buy open pollinated, organic seeds to garden with and save seeds from mature plants at the end of each growing season to save money the next year and keep the next crop true to the parent plants. Use eco-friendly pots, for both growing plants to sell and growing vegetables to pick. Following these guidelines will provide the customer with beautifully healthy vegetables to use at home.

Obtain certification if your vegetables are grown organically.
