Information On Sicily Italy Tourism

Sicily, the Mediterranean's largest island, is separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. The world's most conquered island has been controlled by Asians, Africans and Europeans, and Roman control began around 215 B.C. Sicily, with its culture and history, is now a popular tourism spot.


Castles


The 14th-century castle Palazzo Chiaramonte, or Steri, is located in Palermo. The small town of Enna's features Lombard Castle of the early 13th century, and in Erice, Pepoli Castle is now a hotel and situated near Venus Castle.


Food


Food is a vital piece of Sicilian culture. Caponata is a salad appetizer, and cannoli and cassata are popular desserts.


Greek Temples


The Temple of Diana, in Cefalu, is at the top of a mountain. Akrai has a small amphitheater and ruins of a 6th-century temple dedicated to Aphrodite.


Mt. Etna


Mt. Etna is the island's highest mountain and also Europe's largest active volcano. It is the island's most popular natural attraction, with skiing in the winter and hiking during the summer.


Beaches


Mondello Beach in Palermo is large and popular. Favignana island is a favorite spot among locals.
