Description Of Bruschetta

Bruschetta refers to toasted bread.

Bruschetta offers the cook a toast base on which to build a variety of appetizers. The grilled bread hails from Italy, celebrating the peppery flavor combination of Italian extra virgin olive oil and fresh garlic. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Definition

Bruschetta, pronounced "broo-sket-ta," is Italian toasted bread. Traditional bruschetta requires toasting bread on both sides over hot coals. Toasted bread is slashed, rubbed with fresh garlic and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.

Toppings

Fresh tomatoes and basil drizzled with balsamic vinegar make a familiar, light bruschetta topping. Other bruschetta topping combinations include beans and prosciutto, rosemary and ricotta, fig and onions and smoked salmon and tomato.

Misconceptions

Some people believe that bruschetta is the combination of bread and toppings such as tomatoes and basil. Although bruschetta can be served with toppings, bruschetta simply refers to toasted bread flavored with garlic and olive oil.
