Brown rice
requires more water than white rice to cook.
Rival makes a line of rice cookers. The primary difference between the models is the amount of rice each appliance will cook. The basic instructions are similar for all models, and if you understand use one model, it is fairly easy to use another. Since rice expands when it cooks, refer to your rice cooker's maximum capacity before adding rice, and don't overfill. The cookers come with a rice measuring cup that is smaller than a standard 8 oz. cup. Each cup of uncooked rice makes a little over two cups of cooked rice. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Set the appliance on the kitchen counter, near an electrical outlet. Don't place it under a counter when cooking, as the rising steam can damage your woodwork.
2. Lift the lid and remove the inner pan of the rice cooker. This is where you put the rice.
3. Measure the rice into the inner pan with the cup that comes with the appliance.
4. Hold the pan under the kitchen faucet and rinse the rice with cold water to remove excess starch. Use your clean fingers to move the rice gently in the pan as water runs over it. Carefully drain off the water.
5. Add water to the pan. There are measuring lines alone the inner pan corresponding to how much water to add for the number of cups (the cup that comes with the appliance) of white rice. Fill to the appropriate line. Brown rice requires more water; refer to the package for the recommended amount of water. If you lose your rice cup, refer to your rice package for the recommended ratio of rice to water.
6. Wipe the outside of the inner pan, to remove any water and set it back into the appliance. Put on the lid.
7. Allow the rice to soak in the water for 10 to 20 minutes. This will produce softer rice.
8. Plug in the appliance and press the "On" switch. A light will illuminate indicating the rice is cooking. The light will turn off when finished cooking. Depending on the model, a warming light may turn on, indicating the rice is finished cooking and the appliance is keeping it warm. Some older models may not have a warming feature, or may have a manual warming feature.
9. Allow the rice to set in the pot for at least 10 minutes after cooking before lifting the lid.
