Bakery Manager Job Description

Part of a bakery manager's job is to bake bread, pastries and other grocery items.

Although a baker manager is responsible for preparing and displaying bakery items, they also perform the day-to-day operations that keep their bakery functioning. It is common for bakery managers to "wear many hats" and execute tasks ranging from employee development and budgeting, to sales management and workplace safety.

Function

Although bakery managers prepare baked goods, they are mainly responsible for the overall performance of the bakery department. In addition to managing the daily output and display of bakery products, bakery managers focus on reducing costs, hiring and training new employees, monitoring product quality and consistency, tracking inventory and managing the bakery's budget. Baker managers often work in stores or large supermarkets, and therefore must report their department's sales numbers, labor projects and productivity levels to upper management. Other bakery manager duties include delivering customer service, processing invoices, coordinating orders with outside vendors, and stocking shelves and cases with products.

Education

Candidates applying to baker manager positions should have a high school diploma and training in a small store or supermarket bakery. Bakers also start their careers by becoming an apprentice in a craft bakery. In addition, students can obtain a certificate in professional baking at a community college or technical school (See Resources).

Skills

It is important that bakery managers are detail-oriented and have good oral communication skills, as they often work in teams and with customers. Managers should be skilled in baking, icing and decorating goods, as well as displaying them in attractive cases and other containers that are in public view. As a manager, bakers need strong leadership and decision-making skills to supervise employees and make business decisions regarding staffing and cost control. Basic math and reading comprehension abilities are helpful for tracking inventory, calculating profit and reviewing sales.

Salary

According to a May 2010 report published by Indeed.com, the average salary for a baker manager in the United States was $41,000 per year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) "Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition" states that wages for food processing professionals, including bakers, differ based on experience, education level and location. In May 2008, the BLS reports that the median salary for bakers was $23,290.

Potential

The job forecast is favorable for professionals who work in the food processing industry. The BLS projects that food processing jobs will increase 4% between 2008 and 2018 due to the need to replace workers exiting the workforce. Employers will also need to hire additional workers to produce more food for a growing population. However, previously manual tasks that have been automated by food processing machines in plants and distribution centers will slow job growth. Nevertheless, the BLS expects that the best job opportunities will be for professionals who are highly skilled and able to prepare handmade, specialty food products.

Dogs & Assistive Walking Devices

When your dog gets older, it can lose mobility and need help getting around.

If you've ever watched your dog limp the last mile of a hike, or even worse, not be able to make it around the house because of debilitating injury or condition, then it's probably time to take action. Luckily, if your dog still has lots of life left, options like harnesses, slings and dog wheelchairs can give your dog the mobility it needs to get around and enjoy its golden years.

Background

The first step always is going to the family veterinarian to see if therapy, rest or medications are reasonable solutions for the dog's condition. Once that step is exhausted, it is always best to listen to your vet's advice, especially when it comes to finding a reputable dealer of slings, harnesses or wheel chairs. Also called carts, these devices support either the front or hind legs and allow your dog to walk on its own.

While an accident, degenerative myelopathy, hip dysplasia and spinal and neurological problems can hinder a dogs mobility, harnesses and slings start at around $35 and dog carts start at $200, according to the Wheelchairs for Dogs page on Mobility Advisor's website. Also, if you're dog is a quadriplegic, a few companies offer dog carts for them.

Slings and Harnesses

This is the first option if your dog still has its mobility but seems to tire on a easy walk to the park, while going up steps or after playing with other dogs. Many styles are available that can help your dog with its specific problem. If hip dysplasia, broken bones or skeletal or muscular problems ail your pooch, many styles of harnesses are available that allow you to take some of the weight off the dog's front and back side. For dogs with full-body problems that can still walk but need help, there are support slings that ease the pain and increase the mobility. Harnesses and slings start at about $35 and can cost as much as $185 depending on the style harness and the size of the dog.

Dog Wheelchairs

Dog wheelchairs, or carts, are devices that support the dog's front or back legs, using wheels to replace the limbs, and allowing the dog to walk on its own good legs. Dog wheelchairs have a lightweight frame, a harness and a support saddle so the dog can keep its balance and remain safe while taking a walk with you, and hopefully playing with other dogs. If your dog has lost a leg, you can customize the cart with counterweights and additional harnesses to ensure the dogs safety. Many different wheelchairs are available, from custom-made options, to one-size-fits-all adjustable carts, and most will allow your dog to "go potty" while in the cart. Dog wheelchairs cost between $200 and $600 and a list of manufacturer's is available at the Mobility Advisor's website.

Wheelchair Cautions

While most dogs quickly adapt and many thrive in their new cart, some may take a while to get used to it and even need training. Always keep a close eye on your dog as it gets accustomed to its new form of transportation and never leave a dog unattended in its wheelchair for long periods of time because it can easily become fatigued and the cart can tip over. Finally, make sure you think about your dog's attitude and temperament and whether it will react well to a cart before you make this investment.

What Are The Benefits Of Vitaminc Serum For The Face

Vitamin C has become an increasingly popular ingredient in cosmetic skin-care products. In 1992, Dr. Sheldon Pinnell of Duke University published the results of a study that proved the vitamin-C form of L-ascorbic acid reduced sun damage. This launched further studies that proved vitamin C's other positive effects on the skin. Now, in the cosmetics world, vitamin C is a star ingredient in facial serums. Does this Spark an idea?

Vitamin-C Basics

Vitamin C is crucial to the body's immune system, and serves as an aggressive free-radical fighter. Humans are one of the few animal species that cannot produce vitamin C internally, and must incorporate it into diets and supplements to ensure it can perform its many beneficial functions in the body. It reaches every cell of the body and fights off immune-system invaders, while also playing a key role in the body's connective tissue. It contributes to the cardiovascular system, facilitates fat metabolism, protects tissues from free-radicals, and assists the nervous system. Vitamin C's protective abilities greatly benefit the teeth, bones, and skin.

Skin Benefits

Vitamin C is a prime ingredient of collagen, the substance that binds cells together. Collagen metabolism and production is are key attributes of healthy, radiant, younger looking skin. Collagen ingredients and ingredients that promote collagen production are widely used and advertised in body and skin care products. Collagen, in fact, depends on vitamin C, which implies the vitamin's importance to healthy, attractive skin. Stable collagen production fights wrinkles, and ensures evenness in the skin's tone and texture.

Vitamin C's function as an antioxidant also benefits the skin, as it is able to protect the skin from damaging free radicals.

Topical Application

All vitamins are subject to oxidation when used topically, meaning that the vitamins lose their potency (sometimes drastically) when exposed to the air. Therefore, scientists have had to develop ways to incorporate vitamins into skin-care products without the risk of degradation, so that they can provide as many benefits as effectively as possible. Vitamin C is included in skin-care products in the form of its derivatives, which include L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. These derivatives of vitamin C make it possible for consumers to benefit from the protein's topical application.

Topical Uses and Benefits

Vitamin C is used in skin care as a strong antioxidant, especially in regard to protecting the skin from sun damage. It strengthens the skin barrier and thickens the dermis. It can expedite the healing of wounds and reduce inflammation. In high concentrations, it can reduce the appearance of skin discoloration. Most important, it promotes collagen production, which subsequently plumps the skin and lends it radiance and smoothness. Dermatologists often use vitamin-C products to enhance the effects of cosmetic treatments, such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

Facial Serums Versus Moisturizers

A facial serum is not the same as a facial moisturizer, and most cosmetic skin-care lines offer (and recommend) both. A serum, often lighter and thinner in consistency compared to a moisturizer, is applied to the face after cleansing, and before the moisturizer. Serums usually have specific functions, such as anti-aging or free-radical protection. Serums are able to penetrate deep into the skin layers, while moisturizers address only the superficial surface tissue and its condition.

Serums with Vitamin C

A facial serum with vitamin C provides the most benefit in the vitamin's topical application. In one of its derivative forms, vitamin C will penetrate the surface layers of the skin to deliver its collagen-stimulation benefits, and protect the skin from damaging environmental factors, like ultraviolet rays.

Considerations

While vitamin C provides sun-protection benefits, its topical application, as in a facial serum, is not a substitute for sunscreen protection. A moisturizer with an SPF, or a separate SPF lotion should be applied daily.

How Far Away Should Curtains Be From Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard heaters are a common form of electric heating in homes and businesses. Safety is a huge concern where draperies and a heat source are in close proximity. Does this Spark an idea?

Keep draperies away from heaters.

Types

Baseboard heaters come in portable models as well as those that are directly wired.

Prevention/Solution

Draperies that hang from floor to ceiling near the baseboard heater should have a minimum clearance of 1 inch from the ceiling and 1 inch from the floor to permit air circulation, according to Inspectapedia.com. Full-length drapes must hang at least 3 inches away from the front of the heater including the nearest drape fold.

Warning

Do not allow draperies/curtains to touch the heater. Short drapes or curtains need a minimum of 8 inches from bottom of fabric to top of heater.

Considerations

When planning window treatments, take into account the placement of your baseboard heaters Curtain rods that project further out from the wall than the norm are available. Or consider using top treatments or Roman shades instead of long panels.

Benefits

Baseboard heaters can be a reasonably priced solution for heating needs.

Make A Healthy Chicken Wrap

Chicken wraps are essentially wrapped chicken fajitas.

Chicken wraps have carved a niche in American cuisine for their convenience. Essentially self-contained meals, their fillings are limited only to the size of the wrap, commonly a tortilla. Chicken wraps fit in the diets of those who plan their meals with the goal of weight loss, blood-sugar management, or for the sake of healthy eating. When choosing a filling for your low-fat or low-carbohydrate chicken wraps, keep in mind most vegetables are naturally low in fat and carbohydrates, contribute marginal calories for their size, and typically do not have a profound effect on blood-glucose levels. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Low-fat

1. Coat a non-stick saute pan with 1 tsp. olive oil, and distribute it with a paper towel. Cooking in a dry, non-stick pan damages the non-stick coating. Position the chicken breast on the cutting board. Slice the chicken breast across, into eight 1/2-inch wide strips.

2. Pat the chicken dry and season it to taste. Place the chicken in the pan. Saute the chicken, turning as needed to cook all sides, until cooked through, 6 minutes total. Remove the chicken and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.

3. Position a 10-inch whole-wheat tortilla on the work surface. Spread 1 tbsp. reduced- or low-fat sauce, such as yogurt, on the tortilla. Position the four slices of chicken in the center of the tortilla, parallel to each other, and spaced 1/2-inch apart.

4. Cover the chicken with 3/4-cup of baby greens and the tomato and onion slices to taste. Place the last four chicken slices on the vegetables. Wrap the tortilla around the filling.

Low-carbohydrate

5. Coat a saute pan with 1 tbsp. olive oil and place it over medium-high heat. Allow the oil to heat until it simmers. Cut several parallel slices through the skin on the chicken breast. Season the chicken breast to taste on both sides.

6. Rinse four pieces of Boston Bibb lettuce and set aside to dry. Place the chicken breast skin-side down in the saute pan; cook until the skin crisps, approximately 4 minutes. Turn the chicken and cook an additional 4 minutes. Set the chicken on a plate lined with paper towels and let it rest for several minutes.

7. Wipe out the non-stick pan with a paper towel and add 1 tbsp. olive oil. Heat the pan over medium-high heat until the oil simmers, approximately 3 minutes. Place sliced or chopped vegetables of choice in the pan. Vegetables that accompany the crispness of the chicken include bell peppers, shallots, finely-minced garlic and tomatoes.

8. Saute the vegetables until heated through, but still crisp, approximately 3 minutes. Position the chicken on a cutting board with the muscle fibers running side-to-side. Cut the chicken across the grain into eight 1/2-inch-wide slices. Cutting chicken across the grain makes it easier to chew.

9. Arrange two slices of chicken breast in the center of each piece of lettuce. Top the chicken with 2 tbsp. sauteed vegetables and wrap the chicken.

Make Traditional Giblet Gravy

Giblet Gravy

Make your own giblet broth for this old favorite. This giblet gravy recipe assumes that you are going to roast a turkey or other bird - then the easiest way to make the gravy is in the roasting pan. This recipe yields about 4 cups. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Take the turkey neck and giblets out of the turkey. You'll usually find them in a paper sack stuffed into the bird's body cavity.

2. Place the turkey neck and the giblets - except for the liver - in a medium saucepan. Cover with cold water to 2 inches above the giblets.

3. Add the onion, celery and parsley and bring to a boil over high heat, skimming the foam as it rises to the surface.

4. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the saucepan and simmer for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

5. Add the liver and simmer for 20 more minutes.

6. Use a strainer to strain the broth and reserve - refrigerated if the turkey won't be done for an hour or more. Start the next step after you've removed the bird from the roasting pan.

7. Pour all the fat and other liquid from the roasting pan into a bowl. Save the pan - it will have browned bits on the bottom, which you'll want for your gravy. Set aside the poured-off liquid in the bowl until the fat rises to the top.

8. Skim the fat off the surface and discard, except for about 4 tbsp. Return these to the pan. Discard the remainder of what's in the bowl.

9. Place the roasting pan over medium heat and whisk in the flour.

10. Cook a few minutes, whisking constantly, until the flour is a nice golden brown color.

11. Remove the pan from the burner and slowly add the reserved turkey broth and sherry, stirring constantly.

12. Put the pan back on the burner and adjust the heat so that the mixture boils very gently. Stir constantly until the gravy thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

13. Season with salt and pepper, pour into a gravy boat and serve.

Dog Pancreatitis Treatment

Dog Pancreatitis Treatment

The pancreas is a glandular organ that helps make insulin and the enzymes to digest food. When this organ is inflamed, it's called pancreatitis. This is a non-contagious condition that often affects dogs that are overweight or who are fed a diet too high in fat and sugars. Pancreatitis can kill a dog in a matter of days, so treatment needs to be as soon as possible.

Types

There are two types of pancreatitis--acute and chronic. Dogs with acute pancreatitis will become dehydrated very quickly through repeated vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs with chronic bronchitis have milder symptoms, but still need vet care.

Immediate Treatment

The dog usually needs to stay in the vet hospital a couple of days in order to recover. The dog is given IV fluids, force feedings if necessary and anti-nausea medications such as dolasetron and ondanestron. Sometimes painkillers are also given.

Long-Term Treatment

"Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" recommends preventing new pancreatitis attacks through the use of low-fat prescription diets, regular exercise and medications such as Zantac (ranitidine), if needed.

Considerations

Many dogs with pancreatitis are overweight or are prone to eating garbage or carrion. The garbage needs to be dog-proofed and human food stopped to prevent future attacks.

Misconceptions

Human antacids will not work to help treat dogs with pancreatitis, but they can sometimes be used to ease nausea ("A Pain in the Pancreas" by Mary Straus, "The Whole Dog Journal," Vol. 11, No. 11).

What Feed My Dog

Having a dog is a big responsibility, as you are accountable for your pet's health and proper feeding. A dog should never be fed chocolate, sugar or human snack foods. Dog snacks are OK in moderation, but dogs can gain weight from eating large amounts of unhealthy snacks. With proper feeding also comes the need for veterinary checkups and vaccinations, as well as monthly heartworm prevention medication.

Dry Dog Food

The best food to feed your dog is dry dog food, which is available at any pet store. There are many brands to choose from, as well as ingredient combinations such as chicken and rice, lamb and beef. Dry dog food is recommended by veterinarians as it has the nutrition that your dog needs, but it also helps with bowel movement control. Commercial dry dog food is also available for different breeds, dog sizes and even in adult or smaller puppy-sized kibbles.

Starches from corn, white rice, whole grains and brown rice are also mixed in with dog food, usually with a meat ingredient such as lamb or beef. Necessary protein and carbohydrates in the dog food depend on the dog's size and activity level. Eukanuba Premium Performance Sporting Dog Food is for dogs who are athletes and are more active; this type of food is higher in protein and fat to provide sustained energy. Science Diet Light Canine Maintenance Dog Food is an example of a low-carb food for dogs who are not as active or have trouble maintaining healthy weight.

Human Food

Certain human food, such as cooked chicken, fully cooked rice, turkey and hamburger meat, is OK for dogs to eat. The important things to remember when feeding a dog human food is that it should never be a long-term supplement to dry dog food, it should always be completely cooked and you should never feed your dog very hot food. Cooked rice and chicken are often referred to as "bland diet," which can be given to dogs with diarrhea or other medical condition, as it is easier on their bellies. Always remove all bones and never feed your dogs human food off the table with salt, oil and other seasonings.

Vegetables

Dogs can be fed cooked vegetables such as cut-up carrots, potatoes and peas. You can mix this food in with other ingredients such as chicken and rice. Vegetables can even be given as snacks, especially if a dog is overweight and needs to be on a diet.

Onion should not be given to dogs because of diarrhea, stomach upset and toxicity possibilities. Onion toxicity in dogs can be caused from raw onions, cooked onions, onion powders or flavorings.

List Of Socioeconomic Factors

Income restrictions do not have to determine personal enjoyments.

Socio-economic factors are lifestyle components and measurements of both financial viability and social standing. They directly influence social privilege and levels of financial independence. Factors such as health status, income, environment and education are studied by sociologists in terms of how they each affect human behaviors and circumstances. As lifestyle measurements, they are believed to be directly correlated to patterns of drug use, food choices, migration, disease prevalence and rates of mortality in human populations.

Education

In the most obvious way, educational levels influence economic status, as higher paying jobs tend to require advanced or specialized education. Education, however, also determines social status and allows people to trust those who are educated in their fields of employment. Car mechanics may not be generally considered to be as smart as attorneys, but when a car needs repair, a consumer respects a mechanic's expertise to fix the problem. Trained health care professionals are able to influence the eating and exercise behaviors of entire communities through public campaigns. If they were not held in high social regard, this would not be possible.

Income

Net income is a direct contributor to what a single person or family can afford to spend. Income determines neighborhood choices and living conditions. It is often the deciding factor in higher educational pursuits. People living closer to the poverty line may forego one necessity for another, such as medicine for food or doctor visit co-pays for utility bills. Others with income to spare may spend or save money to contribute to lifestyle freedoms such as travel, early retirement accounts and various luxury items.

Health

Health status is a definite measurement of socio-economic status. Poor health, whether brought on by genetic predispositions, accidents or lifestyle choices, is able to render a person stagnant. Illness can hinder progress in terms of education and employment options. Health status affects mobility and the ability to socialize, thereby restricting the social circle of a lot of sick people. Certain conditions require constant monitoring by health care professionals and a medication-dependent lifestyle, which can be very costly. Disabled persons are often limited financially by a defined social security income, just like elderly people.

Environment

Environment does not have to determine socio-economic status, but is often a reflection of it. An adult may choose to live in a lower income neighborhood to save money on rent. The same person may also choose to socialize with workmates instead of neighbors. In this instance, living environment is not a factor in personal socio-economy. However, children born and raised in the same environment may be socially restricted, as they may be forced to attend public school in an area zoned for their home address. Likewise, ingrained social behaviors in higher income communities are often reflected in the adolescent population. It is difficult for researchers to determine if observed group behaviors are attributable to income status or social environments.

Find Raw Food Retreats In Florida

In the 50s most people in the western world ate cuisine of comfort food such as fried chicken, mashed potatoes and homemade cakes and pies. In the 60s, with the hippy revolution, the diets of Americans started looking towards nature’s basics. There were communes where people lived off of the land, growing their own food. We have become more and more diet conscious ever since then. One of the latest healthy living concepts involves a raw food diet. Science has proven that nutrients and enzymes are destroyed when food is cooked. The concept is that by cooking food, you actually turn it into a diet full of toxins and free radicals. They not only espouse that raw foods are more beneficial to your health, but that cooked foods actually do damage to the body. This movement has grown to the point that you can find, in any major city, raw food festivals, restaurants, consultants and even retreats.

Instructions

1. Hippocrates Health Institute offers two different retreat programs. The Live Change Program offers an education on the specific benefits of a “living diet” (raw food) and maintain the raw food diet lifestyle once you return home. This retreat is a one to three week long event that goes through the full year. The second retreat program is The Health Educator Program. This is a retreat for educators and health conscious entrepreneurs. Taking place three times a year, it is a retreat lasting nine weeks in West Palm Beach, Florida.

2. Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center contributes several retreats to the raw food diet concept. Healthy Eating and Consciousness is a seven day retreat in which the participants are educated on living food concepts and preparation. The Essene Way I and II are offered every year in August. They have daily Essene meditations and teach of living the Essene way as well as eating a raw food diet. They also offer the Vegan Spirit Vacation, the Vegan Spirit Break and Whole Person Healing, all with raw food education.

3. The Raw Food Farm offers weekend retreats in rural Avon Park. You will learn from the basic concept of the living diet to growing and preparing a raw vegan diet you can live with. Their weekend forums are limited to those 21 years of age or older. The Raw Food Farm offers a more personal, family type approach to their raw food education.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Extravirgin Olive Oil Soap

What Are the Benefits of Using Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Soap?

Olive oil has many nourishing properties and can be used for many things besides cooking. Soaps made from extra-virgin olive oil have been used for centuries. They suds up well and wash off easily. Olive oil soap can replace toiletries such as shampoo and shaving cream. Although extra-virgin olive oil soap costs more than most soaps found in grocery stores, it lasts longer and has many benefits. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Olive oil has been used as a cleanser as far back as ancient Egypt. The Egyptians rubbed olive oil on their skin. They found that dirt clung to it and could then be scraped off. Mesopotamian people experimented with putting soap ash (a substance similar to lye) in olive oil to create something like soap. The French combined the ashes from sea plants with locally pressed olive oils in the 6th century and made olive oil soap that would become famous worldwide to make the world's first olive oil soaps.

Features

People with skin sensitivities like to use extra-virgin olive oil soap because it is very mild, even at full strength. You can safely use it to clean babies' skin without a risk of rash. Olive oil soaps can contain other oils, such as coconut oil, in addition to extra-virgin olive oil. Extra-virgin olive oil soap can be produced with or without lye. Lye must be handled with care by someone with soap-making experience, but it is used in many natural living products. Combining lye, water and oil results in a chemical change called saponification. This change creates the soap. Soap containing olive oil and lye is also called castile soap.

Skin Softeners

Olive oil is a natural emollient, so olive oil soap is recommended for dry skin. It can also help people with eczema or psoriasis. Olive oil also contains linolenic, alpha-linolenic, and oleic acids, which encourage the production of prostaglandins in your body. These prostaglandins smooth and firm the skin.

Antioxidant Benefits

Antioxidants found in extra-virgin olive oil provide a protective barrier for the skin and help fight skin degeneration. Olive oil contains polyphenols, which help your body prevent skin damage caused by overexposure to the sun. Olive oil soap contains vitamins that nourish the skin. Vitamin E helps your body produce collagen, and vitamin K can help reduce the appearance of under-eye circles and spider veins.

Non-comedogenic Benefits

Because olive oil has a lower oxidation rate than the natural oils of the skin, it will not clog pores when applied to the skin. This will help reduce breakouts and maintain skin's balance. The non-comedogenic properties make extra-virgin olive oil soap a suitable alternative to shaving cream because it will not cause excess dryness.

Environmental Benefits

Extra-virgin olive oil soap does not contain phosphates. When phosphates enter the water supply, they encourage the growth of algae. The algae turn the water green, deplete it of oxygen and can harm fish and other marine life.

Refined Vs Unrefined Salt

Refined salt, or table salt, undergoes refining to remove minerals and impurities. It contains sodium chloride (97.5 to 99.9 percent) and additives, such as iodine. Unrefined sea salt contains sodium chloride (87 percent) and other minerals (16 percent). Both salts react differently in the human body.

Significance

Refined salt is more popular and obtainable than unrefined salt because it does not clump together in the presence of humidity. Refined salt has anticaking agents that make it easy to use in salt shakers.

Iodine

The human body needs iodine to regulate thyroid function. Iodine is added to some varieties of refined salt, while unrefined salt already contains iodine in addition to other minerals.

Minerals

There are around 92 minerals in unrefined sea salt, including chlorine, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, silicon, bromine, phosphorus and vanadium. Refined salt contains no natural minerals.

Taste

There are different types of unrefined sea salts. The flavor and color depend on where and how they are harvested. Refined salt is white with little variance in flavor.

Other Uses

Unrefined sea salt is also used in cosmetics and as a bath salt. The majority of refined salt is used for industrial purposes, such as the manufacture of paper, dyes and soaps.

If you don't have frozen fruits on hand, you can use fresh fruits and ice cubes to make your smoothies appropriately frozen. In any case, using soy milk and wheat germ adds the right consistency and nutrition to your smoothie recipe. You can also substitute instant oats for the wheat germ, and even add in some vanilla for added flavoring.

Power Up Pancakes

You can purchase vegan pancake mix at health-food stores. Add some protein and flavor to yours by making the mix as usual, and adding a few extra ingredients. Add vanilla extract and vanilla-flavored soy protein powder to give sweetness and healthy protein to your breakfast flapjacks. Then add some cinnamon and sugar for a little extra flavor. These pancakes will give your child the nutrition she needs and the protein her body craves.

If your child isn't a fan of cinnamon, try other ingredients: sliced bananas and walnuts, or blueberries and almonds. Your child will still get healthy protein from the nuts, and even the added benefit of fruit.

Substitutes in Traditional Favorites

Traditional kid-favorite foods can be made into vegan recipes with a few simple substitutions.

For example, use Ener-G "Egg" substitutes in your baking dishes, like cookies and cakes. You can also purchase vegan cheese-substitute products for eating on sandwiches or cooking in meals. Egg-free brownie recipes are available at vegweb.com; use vegan chocolate chips to make homemade Vegan Peanut Butter Cups.

You can use tofu to substitute for meats in traditional recipes, including tofu sausage for breakfast or "tofurkey" in a stir-fry. In some recipes, you can simply eliminate the dairy products and make something just as tasty, and in other cases you may want to substitute with soy milk or similar products.

Manure Biofuel As An Energy Alternative

Cow manure is a viable bioenergy source.

Manure from cows, pigs and chickens can undergo a chemical process to produce alternative energy. Farms in the United States, Vietnam, England and other countries are beginning to implement this idea. Now, pig manure can be processed into crude oil and cow manure can be chemically treated to become gas for stoves. Chicken manure can be processed to generate steam and ultimately electricity. Using animal manure as a fuel source may well be the wave of the future.

Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion, or the decomposition of manure without the use of oxygen, is a three-step operation. First, liquefying bacteria are added to manure in a sealed tank. Then, acid-forming bacteria are added. Methane-forming bacteria are next introduced into the tank, producing two end-products: methane gas and a low-odor effluent (or runoff).

Cow Manure

Cow manure was the first waste product to be used on small farms to generate methane gas and a composite ingredient. The cow dung is mixed with water and placed in a tank where it is digested. The gas produced is collected in a dome, and the solid material is diverted to a composite pit. The gas from the dome is routed via a pipeline to a gas stove or gas lamp. Systems such as this one may qualify for farm subsidies because of their sustainability and environmental impact.

Pig Manure

Scientists at the University of Illinois have successfully developed a process using heat and pressure that converts pig manure into crude oil. They are also very close to developing biodiesel fuel from pig manure. These uses of pig manure virtually eliminate the time-consuming and expensive manure disposal process and produces fuel instead. According to a 2010 article on the alternative energy site, Clean Technica, pig farm pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions would sharply decrease, and drinking water supplies would be protected in livestock farming areas if manure was utilized as an energy source.

Chicken Manure

Chicken manure has been found by scientists in South Carolina to have good potential for multiple uses. Anaerobic digestion (treating manure with chemicals and removing oxygen) can be used to produce electricity. Direct combustion (producing steam by a manure-heating process) can now produce electricity in turbine generators as well. Co-firing (which is heating manure with another fuel, like coal) is in the developmental stage, at the time of publication, and gasification (using heat, steam and pressure to produce a variety of fuels) has been perfected. There is even an electrical power plant in the State of Georgia that produces electricity from poultry manure.

Sell Cosmetics & Other Beauty Products Part Time

Sell Cosmetics & Other Beauty Products Part Time

For those who have a love of makeup, skin care and hair care, part-time beauty sales are a great way to make extra cash doing what you like. Part-time beauty sales afford the opportunity to not only sell great products, but also meet new people. As an added bonus, many manufacturers and stores offer a nominal discount on employee purchases. Part-time beauty sales are a sweet deal, and can become a rewarding part of your life.

Instructions

1. Select a specific area of beauty to specialize in, whether it be makeup, hair care, skin care or other variety of product. For example, the Sephora chain of beauty stores carries fragrance, cosmetics and well-being (skin and body care) products, with specialists for each discipline. It's best to know which beauty category speaks to you before seeking employment of any sort, since your new employer will likely require focus on one area.

2. Do some reading and research on the best brands available in your specialty area. Take some time to visit upscale department stores to browse their counters, and visit the local library. Books such as Paula Begoun and Bryan Barron's "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" are invaluable resources for information about skin care and makeup.

3. Cultivate a fashionable, but professional, appearance. This is another area where research pays off. Clients scrutinize cosmetics salespeople thoroughly before approaching, and an outdated or sloppy look can make or break a potential sale. It's imperative that your makeup and clothing are up to date, and that your appearance is one that inspires others.

4. Tailor your resume to suit the desired place of employment. For skin-care product sales, highlight retail selling experience, along with any other pertinent beauty skills. Even though you're only going for part-time work, possible employers will want to see that you can sell and advise clients knowledgeably.

5. Clear out evenings. For part-time store work, many hours are at night. Full-timers get the bulk of the daytime shifts, since they spend the most time building up a client base and often work on commission only. Be ready to give up some weekend time as well.

6. Look into Avon, Mary Kay or Arbonne for the most flexible part-time sales opportunities. Use the Internet to browse the different sites for their mission statements and product lines. These options are terrific for busy career women, moms and students who may have problems working with a retail schedule. However, these options also require an upfront investment; be ready to pay for at least some supplies before starting in earnest.

Remove Sulfites In Grape Juice

Save a bottle of wine from developing a rancid smell with copper sulfate.

Removing sulfites in grape juice -- or wine -- is essential for keeping the liquid breathable and healthy. A natural overabundance of chemical substances known as mercaptans can cause the wine to smell like rotten eggs. Adding a copper sulfate solution to the wine will remove the rotten egg smell and preserve the wine for consumption. The trick to removing sulfites involves testing the copper solution in a trial glass before applying it to a large batch of wine. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Buy copper sulfate crystals from your local winery or retail shop. Consult with wine-making and retail professionals and tell them you are interested in making a 0.1-parts-per-million copper sulfate solution. In the United States, according to Wine Maker Magazine, no single solution can legally exceed a level of 0.5ppm.

2. Slide on work gloves, safety glasses and a particulate respirator mask to protect your eyes and skin. Add 1g of copper sulfate crystals to a test tube. Fill the rest of the tube with 100ml of distilled water.

3. Pour the contents of the step two test tube into a second test tube. Fill the rest of the second test tube with distilled water up to the 250ml level. You are now finished making the 0.1ppm solution.

4. Add 100ml of "rotten egg"-smelling wine to a wine glass. Pour the 0.1ppm solution into the wine. Allow the mixture to sit for five minutes. Smell the wine. If the smell is gone, the solution works. Repeat as necessary for each 100ml of wine. Increase levels of copper sulfate up to 0.5ppm if the solution if the foul odor remains. Discard the wine if the smell does not go away after adding a 0.5ppm solution.

Duke Rice Diet

The rice diet is a program run by Duke University that focuses on low-fat and low-sodium food in order to lose both water weight and prevent overeating, according to Kitty Gurkin Rosati and Robert Rosati, authors of "The Rice Diet Solution." This diet is also considered a restricted-calorie diet due to the dieter only being allowed to consume 1,500 calories daily while in the program, which causes swift yet safe weight loss. As with any diet, it is important to talk to your doctor to determine if it is safe for you to use.

Phase One: Detox

The first phase of the rice diet is called 'Detox,' as during this time you will be severely restricted from most foods except for starch and fruit. The phase is for seven days, which includes one day of only grains and fruit, followed by six days of only grains, beans, vegetables, fruits and limited dairy, according to Rosati. Detoxing is necessary in order to flush out toxins and excess sodium from your system and get rid of water weight. According to Rosati, most people have 5 to 10 pounds of excess water weight. Grains should be thoroughly cooked, while vegetables can be served raw or cooked. Do not saute or fry vegetables, as it defeats the purpose of trying to lose weight by adding saturated fat to your diet. The first day basic diet menu is 2 servings of starches and 2 servings of fruits for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other six days should consist of 1 starch, 1 non-fat dairy and 1 fruit for breakfast; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for dinner.

Phase Two: Lasting Weight Loss

Phase two of the rice diet is known as 'Lasting Weight Loss' as it continues the cycle of one day of only fruits and grains, five days of grains, beans, fruit, vegetables, and non-fat dairy, followed by one day of including fish, lean meat, eggs or non-fat dairy in your diet. Phase Two continues for as long as you'd like, since during this time you will lose about 3.5 pounds per week, and 14 pounds a month, according to Rosati. When you have reached an ideal weight, you are ready to proceed to the final phase. The first day consists of 2 starches and 2 fruits for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Days 2 through 6 include 1 starch, 1 non-fat dairy and 2 fruits for breakfast; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for dinner. For day 7 you should have 2 starches, 1 fruit for breakfast; 4 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; 3 meats, 2 starches, 2 vegetables and 1 fruit for dinner.

Phase Three: Maintenance

Phase three is the final phase that helps you maintain your new weight and keep your energy levels high, according to Rosati. The weekly menu remains the same, with an addition of 200 calories per week until you stop losing weight. Healthy food options include tofu, cheese, eggs, nuts, olives, lean meat, seafood, or skinless poultry. Your meals should be in single serving sizes unless otherwise stated. Your diet menu should consist of 2 starches and 2 fruits for breakfast, lunch and dinner the first day. Days 2 to 5 include 1 starch, 2 non-fat dairy, and 1 fruit for breakfast; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for dinner. Days 6 to 7 should have 2 starches and 1 fruit for breakfast; 3 1/2 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; 3 protein, 2 1/2 starches and 3 vegetables for dinner.

Home Grown Food

Home grown foods can benefit your entire family.

If you're interested in gardening, or already have a garden that includes edible plants, know the benefits of home grown food. Producing your own fruits and vegetables has several perks--not just for your family, but for the environment. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

Home grown food may motivate kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, since children will connect a sense of accomplishment with growing their own food. According to Medical News Today, growing an edible garden with your children so that they can cultivate their food makes them more likely to eat healthfully and to have healthier arteries than children who don't eat as many fruits and vegetables.

Benefits

Aside from getting children to eat healthier, home grown food carries additional benefits. When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you're reducing the amount of fuel it takes to get these same foods from a commercial garden to your local grocery store, according to MyOptumHealth.com. You're also eliminating the use of paper or plastic to keep fruits and vegetables fresh during their transport to grocery stores, which reduces waste.

Considerations

If you're just starting to grow your food at home, it's best to choose plants that are easy to grow, like lettuce or carrots. Be sure to select plants that you know you'll like to eat once they grow. Remember to water the plants in your edible garden on a regular basis to ensure healthy growth and to keep the garden weed-free.

Grooming Styles For Cockapoos

The poodle makes up one half of the cockapoos genes.

Cockapoos are a hybrid breed created by mixing a cocker spaniel and a poodle. The resulting dog has a full coat of wavy hair that requires significant grooming. Since there is no breed standard cut, the cockapoo can be groomed in a variety of styles. Certain cuts make the breed more easily recognizable.

Cockapoo Coat

The cockapoo coat can come in a variety of colors, including tan, sable, white and red. The coat incorporates the long silky hair of the cocker spaniel with the curly hair of the poodle to create a wavy coat of soft, silky hair. The coat is low dander and does not shed much, making the cockapoo a good dog for allergic owners. The curly hair can mat if not brushed regularly, and the hair above the eyes should be clipped regularly so that it does not inhibit the dog's sight. When the cockapoo's coat is overgrown it can be easy to confuse it with other breeds.

Lamb Cut

The lamb cut is a popular style for poodles that is also applicable to the cockapoo. The lamb cut is a full-body, even, short cut that leaves the hair looking fluffy and full. The face and feet are shaved close to the skin, while the body hair length can vary depending on the aesthetic of the owner. The lamb cut can be modified to leave a beard on the face of the cockapoo, and the ears can either be cut down or brushed and trimmed in a classic cocker ear style.

Cocker Cut

The cocker cut is the classic grooming style of the cocker spaniel. The cocker cut leaves a crest of longer hair on the top of the head while still clipping in front of the eyes. The body is cut close and the hair on the stomach is left longer to form a skirt, as in a cocker spaniel show cut. The ears should be brushed and clipped evenly at the bottom. The cocker cut makes it easier to distinguish the dog as a cockapoo, since it has a cocker appearance with poodle hair.

Puppy Cut

The puppy cut is an evenly shaved cut over the entire coat. The puppy cut is easiest to maintain and only requires brushing a few times a week. The cut can be repeated every two or three months as long as the hair in front of the eyes is clipped when necessary. The puppy cut can be modified to include a crest on top of the head and the cocker ears to more easily identify the dog as a cockapoo.

Culinary Hospitality Schools

Hospitality management schools prepare students for careers in the restaurant, hotel and travel industry.

Formal training in hospitality management prepares students for executive and supervisory positions in the food service and hospitality industry. Most culinary institutions, private colleges and public universities offer programs in hospitality management, with supplementary study in travel and tourism. Students must also take liberal arts courses in addition to fundamental culinary skills and business management classes.

Programs

In addition to fundamental culinary skills and business management classes, students at most culinary institutions, private colleges and public universities must also take liberal arts courses. Degree programs in culinary hospitality include associate of occupational studies (AOS), executive master of business administration (EMBA), Bachelor of Arts in business hospitality management and associate of arts (AOA) in hospitality, travel and tourism. EMBA programs require students to have a bachelor's degree in hospitality or a related field, as well as an executive position in a hospitality-based occupation, at the time of application. AOS and AOA programs prepare students for entry-level positions in the hospitality sector, while bachelor programs often qualify graduates for supervisory positions in hotels, cruise ships and restaurants.

Curricula

The core curricula of hospitality management programs are centered around business management courses, although students must also complete survey courses in culinary arts. Coursework commonly includes instruction in accounting and budget management, customer service, business planning, restaurant and hotel operations, information technology in the food service industry, organizational behavior and restaurant law. Culinary courses often include basic culinary skills I and II, as well as food safety and sanitation. In addition to hospitality coursework, associate's and bachelor's programs require liberal arts classes consisting of study in humanities, social science and history.

Schools and Cost

Culinary schools commonly offer hospitality programs on the associate-degree level, although some also have bachelor degree programs. Four-year universities and private colleges provide bachelor's degrees, EMBA's and MBA's in hospitality management. As of February, 2011, the cost of a culinary hospitality education ranged from $7,000 to $36,000 at a culinary institution and from $14,000 to $45,000 at a private university.

Duration

AOS and AOA programs in culinary hospitality typically last two years, and bachelor degree programs last four years. However, most schools require students to complete a 12- to 18-week externship at a school-approved hotel, cruise line or restaurant upon completion of the two- or four-year program.

Wild Rice Cooking Instructions

Wild rice can be found in the western Great Lakes region of the US and Canada.

Wild rice (Zizania palustris) is a natural grass that is indigenous to the lakes region of the Upper Midwest and central Canada. The aquatic plant has long been a food staple for the Ojibiway, Menominee and Cree peoples. Until 1965 all wild rice was harvested from wild stands with a canoe. But beginning in the 1960s American growers began to cultivate the plant. In the first decade of the 21st century, fields of this tasty grain were under cultivation in Minnesota, California, Idaho, Oregon and Wisconsin. In Canada, all wild rice is harvested from natural sources, although some seeding of lakes and marshes does take place. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Basic Cooking Instructions

1. Begin with processed wild rice. When first harvested wild rice is green, but after drying, curing, fermentation, hulling and packaging, the grain becomes black in color and has a cooking time similar to brown rice.

2. Combine the uncooked wild rice with uncooked long-grain wild rice in whatever mixture you desire. Any mixture between 50-50 and pure wild rice will have contain wild rice's signature rich, nutty flavor. For a simple dish wild rice can be simmered in a covered pot for 45 minutes. For a 50-50 mixture, use four parts of water to one part rice. If you are cooking with pure wild rice you might need six cups of water to one cup of rice. Add the rice after the water reaches a full boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer.

3. Remove the rice from the stove after the water has evaporated and some of the wild rice has split open. Serve hot with salt, pepper and butter.

A Wild Rice Recipe

4. Cook one cup of raw wild rice as described in the first section.

5. Mix the rice with two large, grated carrots, 3/4 cup golden raisins, 3/4 cup mayonnaise and 3/4 cup Russian or Catalina dressing.

6. Refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. This mixture may keep in the ice box for up to a week.

How Much Deli Meat Should Be Bought For Sandwiches

You've decided on a menu of sandwiches for your upcoming party; however, you're having some trouble figuring out just how much deli meat to buy. Before actually purchasing the cold cuts, there are many things to consider: what other food will be served, the type of bread, what items in addition to the meat will make up the sandwiches, whether the sandwiches will be pre-made or put together by your guests, and even the factor of whether guests will be mostly male or female. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Make-It-Yourself Sandwiches

If you are buying your cold cuts from the deli counter, have it sliced thinly, because thinly cut meats will usually go further than thicker slices. Pre-packaged cold cuts should be the deli variety because they are sliced thinner than luncheon meats. The size of the bread will also be a factor in determining how much meat to buy. It's much easier to pile a lot of meat onto a large slice of bread than onto a smaller bun. The average consumption of sandwiches will be a bun and a half per person. For 25 people, you can count on 3 to 5 pounds of meat. Keep in mind that side dishes will help satisfy your guest's appetites and cut down on the amount of meat you will need.

Men Only Sandwiches

Men tend to have healthier appetites than women and also tend to be bigger carnivores, so for a male-only gathering you'll need to adjust the amount of meat needed to satisfy those big appetites. Men also tend to stay away from side dishes and head straight for the meat platter. A deli sandwich platter for 25 men should include 7 pounds of meat.

Women Only Sandwiches

When planning a party for women where deli meat sandwiches will be served, you need to take into consideration that women tend to go for the vegetable trays and side dishes. When women construct their sandwiches, they will tend to pile on more lettuce, tomato and cheese than their male counterparts. Women will be more likely to choose turkey and ham over salami and roast beef, and will often decide on meatless sandwiches if the choice is offered. On average you can probably count on 2 ounces of deli meat per female guest or about 3 pounds for 25 women.

Bake Low Carb Banana Bread

You can eat banana bread as a breakfast food, healthy snack or even a tasty dessert.

Low carbohydrate dieting has proved to be a highly effective way to shed pounds. However, many low carbohydrate dieters have trouble maintaining their new weight. Low carbohydrate dieting requires a permanent change in eating habits, such as consuming very small portions of bread, little sugar and even carefully monitoring fruits and vegetables. With all these constraints, it is not surprising that delicious fruit-based breads like banana breads have been, until recently, nearly out of the low carbohydrate picture. In this article, we will discuss bake low carbohydrate banana bread. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Spray the loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray. This will prevent your banana bread from sticking to the pan.

3. Mix two eggs and the cream cheese in a large mixing bowl. The batter should be thick, smooth and fluffy.

4. Mix in the remaining eggs. Add them one at a time and continue mixing steadily at a medium rate of speed.

5. Slow the speed of the mixer. Since you will be adding dry ingredients, you need to slow the mixer so that the flour and other powdery ingredients do not fly out of the bowl.

6. Add the bananas, protein powder, wheat flour, baking powder, sugar substitute and vanilla extract. Continue mixing until the batter is smooth and even in color and consistency.

7. Mix in the almonds and the wheat bran. These will add texture to your batter. Be sure that all the almonds are completely coated with batter before turning off the mixer and moving on to the next step.

8. Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Use a spatula to make sure that you get all the batter out of the bowl.

9. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. You will know the banana bread is done when it pulls away from the sides of the pan and is firm to the touch in the middle of the loaf. One slice has 4.4 grams of carbohydrates.

Hull Buckwheat

Buckwheat can be used for breakfast cereal or flour, depending on how it is ground. Although its name is misleading, buckwheat is actually a fruit. Buckwheat has no gluten in it, so it provides a good alternative flour for people who are on gluten-free diets. If you grow your own buckwheat, you need to remove its hulls before you can use it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sift your buckwheat through a seed test screen to separate the smaller pieces. When you run the buckwheat through a grain mill, its precise setting will break the hulls apart as long as they are all the same size. If you don't sift the buckwheat first, you will be left with small, intact hulls in your ground buckwheat.

2. Set your grain mill to the size of the buckwheat hulls, and run a handful of them through the mill as a test. If the setting is too large, the buckwheat will come through unhulled. If the setting is too small, the mill will grind up both the hulls and the buckwheat inside them. Aim for a setting that breaks up the hulls but leaves the interior buckwheat whole.

3. Grind all your buckwheat using the mill at the correct setting.

4. Resift your buckwheat through a seed test screen with smaller holes. With the right screen, all of the broken hulls will remain on top, and all the hulled buckwheat will fall through.

5. Spread the buckwheat out on a tray outdoors and blow across it. This will sift out bits of hull and dust left from the grinding process.

6. Store your buckwheat in a sealed container. Use the buckwheat as a cooked breakfast cereal, or grind it into flour for pancakes and bread.

7. Save your buckwheat hulls to use as stuffing in traditional pillows.

List Of The Most Popular Christmas Gifts For Women

Christmas shopping doesn't have to be stressful.

Whether purchasing a Christmas gift for your wife, mother or girlfriend, the most important consideration is the thought you put into it. Many women love to receive lavish gifts they wouldn't splurge on for themselves, but if you're on a tight budget, don't despair: there are popular gift ideas that don't cost a king's ransom.

Jewelry

Consider giving jewelry this Christmas.

Jewelry is a popular and personal gift. If you know her well enough to feel confident about what she would like, go for it. Stay with something simple and elegant, unless you know she has been coveting something in the display case. Ask the salesperson's advice if you don't know what to select, but make sure all sales aren't final because even though your woman might be all smiles when she opens her gift, chances are she won't let you know if she's not crazy about it.

A Day at the Spa

What woman doesn't love being on the receiving end of a massage, facial or manicure? A spa certificate is a popular and pleasing gift choice.

Pampering Coupon Book

If you're counting pennies but would like your woman to have some pampering anyway, consider providing the service yourself. Sure to receive high marks in the "thought and consideration" department, a coupon book made by you is almost always sure to please. Suggestions might be a back rub, neck massage or foot rub. Try adding chores she would like someone else to take over for her when it's her turn, such as cooking dinner, cleaning the house or walking the dog. Remember though, this gift comes from the heart, so don't ask her to wait until the football game is over before you deliver.

Perfume

Fragrance counters are especially busy at Christmastime because perfume is one of the top-selling gift choices. However, most women have specific likes and dislikes when it comes to perfume. If you aren't familiar with what perfume she prefers, it might be better to buy her a fluffy bathrobe.

A Fluffy Bathrobe

A bathrobe might seem like a generic gift, but many women love to receive them. A bathrobe tends to be an item that women overlook when shopping for themselves so it's always nice to receive a new one. Stay away from prints and designs--sometimes less is more.

Gifts of Interest

A cookbook is a great gift idea for the budding chef.

If the woman you are buying for is into gardening, consider some gardening tools or special gardener's soap and lotion. If she's into golf, maybe some new golf balls; or if she loves to cook, visit a kitchen store and check out the latest gadgets. Hobby-related gifts are popular and they say you took the time to care.

The Gift of Reading

If you know that she likes to read, consider a gift card from a local bookstore. Though gift cards might seem impersonal, most readers enjoy gift cards because then they can select books that they haven't read yet and would enjoy.

What Is A Turkey Neck Skin Condition

What Is a Turkey Neck Skin Condition?

Sagging neck skin. also known as Turkey Neck, can be an unwelcome side effect of the aging process and a difficult one to get rid of at that. Does this Spark an idea?

What is it?

Turkey Neck is a condition that causes sagging of the neck and jowl skin. It results in a look that is not unlike the fleshy neck of a turkey.

Causes

Some people are more likely to develop this condition due to the role of genetics. However, the biggest cause of turkey neck is age. With age, the skin thickens, the neck area may develop more fat, and muscles begin to separate.

Noninvasive Treatment

If you are beginning to develop a case of turkey neck, there are creams available for treatment, but they are unlikely to do much for this condition. Laser and Botox treatments may lessen the appearance of a turkey neck, but surgery is usually needed to see dramatic results.

Surgery

The best way to get rid of your turkey neck is surgery. Liposuction and neck lifts produce the best results, but are much more invasive forms of treatment. Cosmetic surgeons remove excess skin and fat and tighten up the neck area.

Considerations

Before contacting a cosmetic surgeon, you may want to consider how much this issue bothers you and whether or not it is something you can accept and live with.

Improve Fertility With Ayurveda

Unfortunately many couples are plagued by infertility, especially as people are waiting longer to have children. While some doctors may recommend fertility treatments provided by a reproductive endocrinologist, you may want to consider Ayurvedic medicine first. This non-invasive alternative therapy has been known to help couples improve fertility.

Instructions

1. Balance the menstrual cycle. Immediately after menstruation, women should eat healthy and nourishing soups. After ovulation and before menstruation, Yoga should be increased. During menstruation relaxation and warmth are priorities.

2. Provide additional support to the female reproductive organs through gentle daily warm oil massage of the abdomen in clockwise motion. Always follow massage with a warm bath or shower.

3. Eat fertility-enhancing foods such as almonds, pumpkin seeds, milk, seaweed, pomegranate and grapes. Incorporate powerful herbs into your diet including red clover blossoms, nettle leaves, raspberry leaves and flaxseed oil.

4. Increase digestive functioning by cleansing the digestive system several months before attempting to conceive. Cleansing involves eating light meals consisting of seasoned vegetables, soups and sweet fruit.

5. Establish a regular daily routine consisting of a regular bedtime, regular meal times and meditation at least once per day.

6. Remove factors contributing to stress to increase fertility.

7. Enhance circulation by exercising daily. Yoga is a integral part of a comprehensive Ayurvedic routine.

Make Bulgar Wheat

Bulgar wheat is made from whole wheatberries. The wheatberries are cooked until tender and then crushed or rolled into smaller granules. Bulgar is one of our oldest grains, with evidence suggesting it has been eaten by humans for nearly 4,000 years. While it doesn't show up often in American recipes, it is a regular part of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern diets. The Middle Eastern dish, tabbouleh, is probably the most well known bulgar dish. Bulgar is easy to prepare and can be found in bulk or in the ethnic specialty food aisle at the supermarket. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Set 2 cups of lightly salted water to boil in a heavy saucepan.

2. Measure out 1 cup of bulgar wheat.

3. Pour the wheat into the water once it has reached a rolling boil.

4. Stir once and reduce the boil to a simmer. Cover the pot but watch to make sure the water does not boil over. You may want to leave the lid slightly ajar to allow some steam to escape and prevent this from happening.

5. Cook the grain until it is tender. This will take 45 minutes to an hour.

Make A Natural Roach Repellent

Make a Natural Roach Repellent

A Roach is by far one of the most detested creatures we can find in our home. We spend a lot of money on pest control each year, much of it to get rid of roaches. There are less expensive and more eco-friendly green ways to repel roaches. Natural roach repellents made with essential oils are one of those ways. This method of making roach repellents is generally considered the safest of the natural alternatives, including the use of boric acid.

Instructions

1. Take a standard size plastic spray bottle and fill with the following mixture.

* 1 cup water

* 1 Tsp. Salt

* 20 drops Peppermint essential oil

* 10 drops Cypress essential oil

Shake well.

2. Spray the solution around the floor boards, inside cabinets, and around places of roach and insect entry into your house. It will repel the roaches naturally, and is safe.

3. Another alternative to spraying in your house, especially in those locations where you have seen more than one roach, is to soak a cedar chip in the roach repellent you made. Take the cedar chips and place them in the corners and cabinets where you have seen the most roach activity.

Oven Cook Chicken Fillets

Baked chicken fillets can be added to a variety of dishes.

Baked chicken fillets are one of the most versatile meats when it comes to developing recipes. They can be used in sandwiches, salads, noodle dishes, as pizza toppings or as the main dish in a meal. The fillets can be flavored in dozens of ways and stored in bulk in the freezer. Baking fillets rather than pan frying helps reduce the amount of oil needed to properly cook the meat. A 100g skinless fillet of chicken contains about 116 calories, ranking it among the leanest of available meats. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Wash the chicken fillets thoroughly in cold water to remove any slime or surface bacteria. Dry with a paper towel and place on a plate.

2. Line a glass baking dish or tin with aluminum foil to prevent the chicken from sticking to the bottom of the dish and to make clean up more efficient. Grease the pan with vegetable shortening or use cooking spray if you do not have foil.

3. Place the fillets in the baking dish. Spread them out evenly so they cover the entire dish. Fit in as many as you can; they can be packed tightly and rub against each other.

4. Sprinkle the fillets with salt and pepper. Use your fingers or the back of a spoon to rub the salt and pepper into the flesh.

5. Top each seasoned fillet with small chunks of butter or with olive oil. Apply one tbsp of butter or a half tbsp of olive oil per fillet.

6. Bake the fillets in a preheated 350-degree oven for thirty to forty-five minutes or until the fillets are golden and crusty, and the insides are no longer pink. Test the cooking progress by removing the pan from the oven and cutting into the fillet to determine the rawness of the meat.

7. Let cool slightly and serve or use in a recipe.

Food Marketing Ideas

Marketing a food product can help you reach more customers, which can lead to increased sales.

Marketing food and beverage products is big business. According to the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy's report "Evaluating Fast Food Nutrition and Marketing to Youth," the fast food industry alone spent $4.2 billion on marketing in 2010. To stand out in this market, you need to find your niche and identify the key differentiators for your food product. There is no standard approach to food marketing, so try out several different tactics, and use the ones that work best for your company.

Sampling

While sampling can be an expensive marketing idea because you are essentially giving away your product for free, it can also be very effective for food companies. If you have a truly great food product, then one of the best ways to build a loyal customer base is to let people try your product for free. This strategy can lead to repeat customers, which can be an important part of your food business. Give away free samples of your food product in your store or on your website, and track how your sales numbers respond.

Point of Purchase Signage

Point of purchase marketing, also known as "POP," is another idea you can use to promote your food product. Attention-grabbing signage can be a cost-effective way to communicate with your customers. For example, you can use signs in your store to advertise a new food product or combo meal. Or, you can create signs to place outside your store to advertise a special, limited-time deal or discount on a particular food product.

Loyalty Programs

Loyalty programs are part of a marketing strategy called "customer relationship marketing." The goal of this type of marketing is to develop a base of loyal customers for your food product by rewarding them for doing business with you. Loyalty programs come in all shapes and sizes for food companies. You can build a simple, cheap loyalty program by giving your customers punch cards that they can redeem for a free meal or product after buying a certain number of products. Or, you can partner with a company that develops mobile loyalty programs that allows customers to scan their receipts with their smart phones, and receive targeted deals and discounts to their email based on their past food preferences.

Event Marketing

Event marketing allows you to promote your food product to a large group of potential customers and helps you build awareness for your brand. Search online for conferences, trade shows, festivals and food tasting events in which you can participate. Contact the event organizers and inquire about setting up a tent or booth. These events allow you to interact face-to-face with lots of people, and help spread the word about your product.

Sugarcane Juice Health Benefits

Sugarcane Juice Health Benefits

It may sound completely ridiculous at first, but sugarcane juice is actually good for you. Though it is comprised purely of sugar, it is comprised of the right sugar; that is unrefined sugar. The juice is most widely consumed in Brazil, India and South East Asia, though today some 200 countries cultivate the crop. Sugarcane juice has a profound presence in the cultures and gastronomic histories of these regions; a primary indication that there must be something more than a sweet taste to this beverage that has kept it in the diet of variant cultures for so long.

What is Sugarcane Juice

Sugarcane is a field crop, and to many unaware of its identity, its appearance is remarkably that of tall field grass. It is a grass, though upon closer examination of the sugarcane stalk, it appears more in common with that of bamboo: thick and tough. The difference, however, from bamboo is that it contains---you guessed it---sugar. Though not the white powdery substance as we know it, but rather raw sugar. Juice can can be extracted from the stalk by sucking or chewing on an exposed end, though for quantity extraction, the cane must be pressed through a machine; an industrial juicer if you will.

Refined Versus Raw Sugar

Sugarcane juice is sugar in its basic form: raw. Raw sugar is naturally good for the body, as it contains nutrients and minerals. These are visible by natural brown tint and notably larger size of the crystal. Refined sugar has been stripped of the nutrients and minerals, therefore a process similar to the "bleaching" process of wheat flour. Refined sugar is pure carbohydrate and contains no other nutritional value, and during the refinement picks up unnatural chemicals such as phosphoric acid, sulfur dioxide and formic acid.

Health Benefits

As raw sugar contains no simple sugars, sugarcane juice has a relatively low glycemic index (the effect a carbohydrate has on blood glucose levels), which keeps the body's metabolism healthy and helps maintain a healthy body weight. Roughly one teaspoon of raw sugar contains only eleven calories. The natural minerals and vitamins found in sugarcane are exceedingly valuable. Phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. Sugarcane is an alkalizing substance, and therefore is beneficial at fighting cancer. Studies have shown that it has proven an effective at fighting prostate and breast cancer cells. Furthermore, it is exceptionally beneficial for rehydration as it not only cools the body but also energizes with a high quantity of useful carbohydrates and protein. The nutrients found in sugarcane are beneficial to inner organ functioning, including the kidneys, heart, brain and sex organs.

Sugarcane and Diabetes

As it contains no simple sugars, sugarcane can be enjoyed by diabetics without worry. In diabetic and weight loss experimentation, the replacing of raw sugarcane juice for refined sugar and other sweeteners has shown positive results not only in stable glucose levels, but also in weight loss.

Suggestions

If possible, sugarcane juice is best enjoyed by sucking it from a raw stalk, or purchasing it freshly pressed from a vendor. If geographical location inhibits either, then there are a few commercial raw sugarcane juice products available, such as Raw Cane Superjuice. For an alternative flavor, sugarcane juice can be spiced up with lemon, ginger or coconut water.

Homemade Hair Products For Natural Hair

Conditioner

Making your own hair products is the ideal way to avoid the chemicals and suspicious ingredients that are found in so many commercial products. It's easy, too. Shampoos, conditioners and rinses can be whipped up using ingredients you already have around the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Shampoos

To make shampoo, castile soap is the ideal starting point. Pure castile soap is made from olive oil, is a gentle cleanser and won't leave any residue on your hair. Buy it in a liquid form, and add ingredients to suit your hair type. Commercial shampoos have ingredients added to create that foamy lather, so don't expect your homemade shampoos to lather as much. But that doesn't mean they're not working.

For dry hair, add oil to replace the moisture that is stripped away by shampooing. Try mixing a few teaspoons of avocado, coconut, jojoba or olive oil into the liquid castile soap. Aloe vera gel is also a great choice for dry hair. You can boil herbs in distilled water, strain and add the herb-infused water to your shampoo. Good herbs for dry hair include burdock, calendula, chamomile, rose geranium, lavender, rose, rosemary, cedarwood and sandalwood.

For oily hair, add tea tree or peppermint oil to your shampoo for a tingly, cleansing mixture. You can also mix baking soda and water (about 1 tsp. baking soda to 1/4 cup water) and scrub it into your scalp to clear out dirt- and oil-clogged pores.

For a lightening shampoo, steep six bags of chamomile tea in a cup of boiling water. Add the juice of one lemon. Mix with castile soap.

To add fragrance to your shampoo, add a few drops of vanilla or almond extract to the soap. Homemade shampoo keeps for about six months if kept in a cool, dry place.

Conditioners

Natural oils are a wonderful deep-conditioning treatment for your hair. Massage almond, apricot, avocado, coconut, jojoba or olive oil into your scalp and work your way down to the ends. Wrap hair in a towel or use a shower cap. Leave on for an hour or so before shampooing out. Your hair will be shiny and soft.

Henna is another natural conditioner. Choose colored henna if you want to add a subtle shade while conditioning. Mix the henna with water or milk to form a paste and leave it on your hair for 20 minutes.

Protein-rich foods such as eggs or milk are great for conditioning and sealing the hair cuticle. Mix with any of the following ingredients: honey, mashed banana, mashed avocado or mayonnaise.

Rinses

Rinses are easy to make and give your hair an extra boost, whether you need more shine, added color or clarifying. To get the most out of a rinse, use two bowls. Pour the rinse into one bowl, lean over the second bowl, and drench your hair with the liquid. Then place the now-empty bowl beneath your head and pour again. The more times you drench your hair, the more effective the rinse will be.

For shiny light hair, add one part lemon juice to two parts water. For shiny dark hair, add one part vinegar to two parts water.

To accentuate light color, make an infusion from chamomile flowers or rhubarb. For dark hair, use super-strong black tea or black coffee. For red hair, use a mixture of beet and carrot juice.

To remove build-up from hair, rinse with one part apple cider vinegar and two parts water.

Use A Countertop Convection Oven

Countertop convection ovens are manufactured by a variety of different companies, yet they all operate in much the same way. These small ovens allow you to cook meat straight from the freezer and create a number of family favorites in less time than a conventional oven. Some newer models resemble toaster ovens, but their controls still remain the same. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Assemble your countertop oven according to the manufacturer's instructions. For glass and plastic-domed-top ovens, assemble the base and the food rack. For toaster-type ovens, no assembly is required.

2. Place the food to be cooked on the rack. For dome-topped ovens, place the dome over the base. Attach the power head to the dome, twisting it clockwise into place until it locks securely.

3. Set the heat level of the oven. This will be similar to setting a conventional oven --- for instance, 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Set the time for how long you want the food to cook. Most convection ovens have a limit of 60 minutes, so if your food will take longer than that, you will have to reset it after an hour.

5. Plug the oven into an electrical outlet and press the "On" button.

6. Allow the food to cook until the chime sounds. Remove the food from the oven and, if it's meat, allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before you serve it.

What Are The Differences Between Oat & Wheat Straw

Oat and wheat straw are cereal grains. Since they are rich sources of protein, carbohydrates and soluble fiber, humans have cultivated them for thousands of years. You're probably most familiar with these grains as staple breakfast foods, since they can be found in many dry cereals or as "instant" hot cereals. However, while both grains share many common uses, certain differences between oat and wheat straw set them a world apart.

Differences in Common Uses

Oat and wheat straw are botanically classified as grasses, since they both belong the monocot family of plants. In addition, both oat straw and wheat straw are used as bedding for livestock. However, according to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, oat straw is also used as an herbal remedy taken as an alcohol tincture or prepared as a tea. While there is a lack of sufficient scientific data to validate most of the health claims associated with supplementing with oat straw preparations, some herbalists recommend its use in treating an enlarged prostate, sexual dysfunction in both men and women and various nervous disorders. In contrast, the culinary and medicinal applications of wheat straw are largely limited to the production of baked goods, pasta, beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Nutritional Differences

There are some nutritional differences between crude oat and wheat straw. Generally speaking, the former contains more carbohydrates while the latter contains more fiber, protein and fat. In addition, wheat contains prolamines, specialized proteins collectively referred to as gluten. People with an autoimmune disorder called celiac disease cannot tolerate wheat gluten. Oat straw, on the other hand, does contain a type of prolamine called avenin, which can contribute to allergic reactions in celiac patients. However, if oat straw is grown under conditions in which it is unlikely to become cross-contaminated with other grasses, including wheat, then it may be labeled as "pure" and considered an acceptable substitute in products that normally contain wheat gluten.

Differences in Industrial Applications

There are several industrial uses of wheat straw, while there are virtually none for oat straw. For one thing, wheat straw is used as an alternative to steel and wood in the home construction industry, a practice known as straw bale construction. It is also combined with recyclable plastic to make composite fencing, planter boxes and other garden and landscaping accessories. Finally, wheat straw is used to produce biofuels, most notably ethanol.

Allergycare Food Company

Allergycare gluten-free products help individuals suffering from celiac disease.

Health foods have become a major niche market in the retail food industry. Vegetarian products have expanded beyond health food stores to supermarkets and have gone mainstream. Gaining popularity right behind vegetarian products are gluten-free foods. Allergycare products are one of the brands catering to a health-oriented, special diet-niche market.

Definition of Gluten-Free

Allergycare produces health food and gluten-free products for mail order distributors and health food stores. Gluten-free products do not have any grain, including wheat, rye, barley, oats, grain crosses or derivatives of any of these grains. Gluten-free products are important for celiac disease sufferers. Celiac disease is an allergy to all gluten products and any food items containing gluten. Gluten produces a reaction in the small intestines that damages the lining of the intestines and prevents the body from absorbing certain nutrients. There is no cure for celiac disease, but the disease can be managed by controlling diet.

The Allergycare Story

Small companies have produced health food products for years. They sell to vegetarians and individuals seeking chemical-free, natural food products, and products for individuals with various allergies. The Complementary Medicine Centre in Taunton, England, was one of the first companies in the United Kingdom to advocate and sell specialized foods and alternative products to people with allergies. The company introduced a line of gluten-free pasta and opened a number of health food stores where organic, gluten-free foodstuffs were sold. Its line of products was called Allergycare.

Allergycare Products

Allergycare specializes in organic dairy-free and gluten-free products. It does not use any chemically modified ingredients. The company offers baking products, such as different types of flour, including buckwheat, millet and tapioca, and gluten-free yeast and baking powder. There is a bread mix and herb-and-onion stuffing mix. The company offers egg substitutes and other baking ingredients.

Whizzers

A brand of dairy-free, gluten-free chocolate called Whizzers was one of the company's first products. The small chocolate treats were shaped like footballs. The line has expanded to include Whizzers beans, chocolate eggs and soccer balls.

Create An Above Ground Organic Vegetable Garden And Grow Your Own Food

Starting an above ground organic vegetable garden can save you money on your grocery bill. As long as you construct your raised garden bed correctly, you can reap the rewards of growing healthy and vibrant vegetables all summer long. While growing organic vegetables saves you money, it can also limit the amount of harmful pesticides that are put down each year into our environment. In addition, growing your own food decreases our dependency on oil by reducing the number of freight trucks on our roads. Here are some steps to help you create an above ground organic vegetable garden that will pay you for years to come! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a good location in your yard that gets at least 6 hours of afternoon sun that will be used to construct your above ground organic vegetable garden. Be sure to choose your location wisely as it is difficult to go back and change later. Once you identify your location, map out the size and shape of your above ground garden bed with wooden stakes or some other marking tool.

2. Build your above ground organic vegetable garden using recycled materials (if possible) or items you have around your home. Wooden timbers, brick pavers, and stones all can be used for this step. Try and build the raised garden bed to be about 8 inches in height.

3. Fill your raised vegetable garden with organic topsoil once you have constructed the layout. It is critical to the health of your vegetables to use nutrient rich soil for this step. Healthy soil promotes strong root development, which is key to growing strong vegetable plants.

4. Depending on the time in the growing season, either sow in organic vegetable seeds into your garden or plant organic vegetable plants purchased at the store. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging in regards to planting depth and spacing. Growing seeds is obviously a cheaper alternative but takes longer to get the plants established.
