What Are The Turkey Giblets & Neck Used For

Don't cook the giblet bag with the turkey.


Some people throw away that little bag of "innards" found in frozen and fresh turkeys, but there's more you can do with these morsels. Look beyond their gross-out factor and add them to recipes for a new taste adventure. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Preparation


No matter what you decide to do with turkey giblets, you'll have to prepare them first. Before you stuff and cook the bird, remove the giblet bag. Take out all the pieces and separate the liver if you don't like the taste. Toss everything else in a small saucepan with some spices or an onion. Cover with water, boil and simmer.


Gravy


Make giblet gravy


Now you're ready to add them to recipes, like turkey giblet gravy. Use both the chopped giblets and the broth from boiling. Most cooks recommend against using the liver in gravy since it adds a distinctive liver taste, but to each his own.


Stuffing


You can also chop up the cooked pieces and toss them into turkey stuffing. Some stuffing recipes recommend using the giblet broth in place of turkey broth or butter.


Stock


Store broth for later


You can also strain the broth you get from boiling and store it in the refrigerator or freezer to add to soup and gravy recipes later.


Pate


Give your best friend a treat


You can use the turkey liver to make turkey pate, or mix it with duck or chicken liver. Again, personal preferences rule here. Some people enjoy the taste of turkey liver, while others loathe it. (Some folks feed the chopped, cooked liver to their dogs, although some smaller breeds are known to get sick on it.)

What Are Organic Soil Additives

Organic soil additives improve the overall quality of the soil.


Organic soil additives create a healthy environment for plants by improving the soil fertility, structure and aeration. Organic additives are made from living things, their waste products and the products of their decomposition. Inorganic additives are mined or manmade. Does this Spark an idea?


Cautions


Some organic additives are best used sparingly. Wood ash is high in salts which remain in the soil, and it raises the pH of the soil. Wood products such as sawdust and shredded wood and bark tie up the nitrogen in the soil as they decompose. Eventually the nitrogen is released, but meanwhile, an additional source of nitrogen should be added to the soil.


Animal Wastes


Compost animal manures before adding them to the garden, or add them several months before planting. Compost manures at temperatures between 130 to 140 degrees F. If your compost pile doen't get hot enough, the compost is safe for use in flower beds but not in vegetable gardens. Biosoil is a polite term for the byproducts of sewage treatment. Only use grade 1 biosoil, and never use it for root vegetables.


Compost


Anyone with a 3-foot-square area of ground can make their own compost. Composting converts yard and kitchen waste into a rich, organic soil additive. Compost loosens heavy soils, improves the drainage, adds nutrients to the soil, and improves the overall structure.


Peat


Sphagnum peat improves the soil structure, moisture retention and helps to acidify the soil. Peat moss is usually too fine and holds too much moisture, wicking it away from plant roots. Peat moss is dredged from wetland bogs that take hundreds of years to regenerate. Always choose sphagnum peat over peat moss.

Store Your Fresh Cut Kale

Fresh kale lasts for days when properly stored.


Kale is a hearty, nutrient-rich variety of cabbage enjoyed by people around the world. Kale is loaded with vitamins such as K, A and C and is packed with antioxidants that boost the immune system and ward off toxins. Kale can be eaten raw or cooked, and must be properly stored to maximize shelf life and retain the nutrients that make it one of nature's healthiest vegetables. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Pull the leaves apart gently from a bundle with firm, dark green leaves and moist, pale green stems. Look for any soft or moldy spots inside. Discard any leaves that are yellow, brown or full of holes, as this may indicate insect infestation.


2. Cut the elastic band from the kale with a sharp knife, then place the kale in a plastic storage bag. Squeeze the air out of the bag and zip it closed. Write the date the kale was purchased on the bag. Store it in the coldest section of your refrigerator. Fresh kale will keep fresh for up to five days, although the flavor may become stronger the longer the vegetable ages.


3. Remove the kale from the refrigerator when you are ready to cook it. Fill a deep bowl with cool water and spread the kale leaves along the top of the water. Press the leaves under water with your hands, swishing your fingers back and forth to loosen any sand or dirt from the kale. Let the leaves soak for five minutes, then drain away the dirty water and rinse the leaves a second time.


4. Lay a clean cloth towel on the counter and spread the rinsed leaves over the towels. Place the leaves in a single layer, then blot the top of the leaves with another towel to get the leaves as dry as possible. Trim away the dry, woody ends of the stems and prepare the freshly washed kale for your dish.

Birds that are not birds of prey, that are hatched from eggs, have feathers and walk soon after hatching are kosher.

Fish that have fins and scales are considered okay to eat.

Dairy products can be consumed, though not at the same time as eating meat.


Slaughter Practices


The animal must be slaughtered by a shochet (an individual specifically trained for this job) by severing the jugular vein, carotoid artery, esophagus and trachea in a single continuous cutting movement with an unserrated knife. Any unnecessary pain must be avoided and as much blood as possible needs to be removed.

Find A Wholesale Distributor

Meeting with people in person is always the best option.


When opening a business, finding a wholesale distributor will help you buy your products at a cheaper rate than buying them outright. There are many different ways to do this now that nearly anything is available on the Internet, which is a great place to start. Make sure you know what you want to sell and have income ready to purchase the goods you want before talking to any wholesale distributor.


Instructions


1. Go to the product's website. Some will sell to smaller companies and some will not, saying that they only deal with larger ones. If they will not deal with you, ask them if they will give you a list of companies they deal with.


2. Contact the large companies that the product deals with. Many of these companies sell their products to smaller companies in hopes of expanding their business.


3. Search for distributors that already sell the product online. Many of them will sell to smaller companies as well to generate business.


4. Visit a trade show that deals in your product. There are trade shows for nearly anything nowadays, so it should not be hard to find one. Talk to the dealers directly at the show and get as much information as you can. Give them a business card with your information on it and get their information as well.


5. Check online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon Marketplace for deals on the product. Some of these dealers are actually small companies trying to unload product they could not get rid of elsewhere.

Freeze Corn On The Cob Without Blanching

When your corn harvest all comes in at once -- or you pick up a bargain bushel at your local farmers market -- there is a safe, easy and quick way to freeze corn on the cob without heating up the kitchen with a big pot of boiling water. Though most food preservation experts recommend blanching -- cooking fresh vegetable in boiling water for one to three minutes -- before freezing, you can skip blanching and still maintain the flavor of your frozen corn on the cob. Instructions


1. Pick corn on the cob from the garden early in the day so you will get that just-picked flavor and allow you time to freeze the corn the same day you picked it. Do not husk the corn before you freeze the corn.


2. Trim any corn silk and ragged husk ends from the cob with a knife or scissors.


3. Place the corn on the cob, husks and all, into the freezer, laying them flat on a cookie sheet.


4. Freeze the corn on the cob for 48 hours. Remove frozen corn on the cob from the freezer.


5. Place the frozen corn on the cob into freezer bags. Label bags with date corn is frozen. Place frozen corn on the cob back into freezer.


6. Use frozen corn within four months to avoid changes in texture and flavor.

1. Research the best way to plan your particular store's layout. Different types of retail shops call for various layouts. For example, a shoe store will have a different design than a grocery store. 2. Plan so that your store can accommodate a long waiting line. Hopefully, your store will be successful enough to at times have a waiting line for the cash register. Make sure that you can accommodate all of your customers in a comfortable way. They won't want to be crammed next to each other while they're waiting to purchase an item.


3. Create aisles that are wide enough to handle all of your shoppers. If you think your store will have more than one shopper per aisle, it should be wide enough to comfortably fit more than one person.


4. Consider your customers. Anyone walking into your store will want to find what he is looking for as quickly and easily as possible. This is especially true if you're running a convenience-type store. Shoppers aren't looking to browse; they know what they want, and a successful store will point them in the right direction. If not, customers may get frustrated and take their business elsewhere.


5. Contact your local business department to find out about specific zoning and safety laws. You'll need to abide by local governing rules regarding exits and capacity.

Instructions


1. Keep their food dishes filled. A hungry chicken is a far cry from a healthy chicken. It is essential that their food dishes and water containerss be full at all times. Also, if it be at all possible, allow your chickens to free range. This insures that what they are eating is all natural, made from Mother Nature herself. However if this is not an option, check on your chickens three times a day and fill their dishes accordingly.


2. Clean their water containers. Once a day you should dump the water, clean the dish with bleach water and refill it. Chickens can be dirty animals, often letting their bladder and bowels empty into their food and water. By bleaching their dishes, you will kill any bacteria that could kill them.


3. Clean their coops two to three times a week. The number of times you clean their cages is dependent on the number of chickens you have placed together. It is vital that you rake out the old pine shavings and replace it with fresh. Chicken stool is a major contaminant for them, so to avoid any of the numerous diseases a chicken can become infected with, stool free living quarters is the way to go.


4. Buy heat lamps. This is especially important in the winter months when temperatures drop below freezing. While heat lamps are generally only used for chicks when they are newly hatched, they are used for adult chickens to prevent them from freezing to death. A one hundred watt bulb is sufficient for eight to ten chickens.


5. Check for lice or mites. It is a good idea to check periodically for chicken lice or mites, especially during the fall and winter when these parasites are most prevalent. Mites and lice can cause ordinarily healthy chickens to lose their feathers, weight, and slow or stop egg production. If you notice that your chickens have become infested, you can purchase a lice/mite powder from your local feed store.

Knives made of high-carbon steel hold their edge best, but stainless carbon steel doesn't stain and holds an edge almost as well.


Chef's Knife


A chef's knife, sometimes called a cook's knife or a French knife, comes in standard lengths of 6, 8, 10 or 12 inches. They are used for all sorts of cutting chores from slicing, dicing, mincing and chopping to crushing garlic cloves. A paring knife is used for peeling and trimming fruits and vegetables. They are small, with a 3 to 5 inch straight, narrow blade that is pointed at the end. They are easy to use and work well for coring fruit and for slicing or dicing small items such as garlic or shallots.

Chef's knives are used for all sorts of cutting chores.


There are other useful knives that are part of a chef's collection but may or may not be everyday items in the kitchen. Bird's beak or tourne knives are paring knives with blades curved like a hawk's beak that are ideal for cutting the curved edges of tourneed (oblong) vegetables. Cleavers are chopping tools that are heavy enough to cut through some bones. Cheese knives have either a short thick blade to cut through hard cheese or a long narrow blade for soft cheese. A filleting knife is a boning knife with a long, thin, flexible blade especially designed for filleting fish.

Boil Eggs So They Are Not Hard To Peel

Placing eggs in cold water prior to boiling will help them to not crack.


Hard-boiling eggs isn't necessarily as easy as it's made out to be. The perfect hard-boiled egg is easy to peel and has a tender texture. A lot of people boil eggs too long, which results in a rubbery egg. Another common mistake is boiling eggs that are too fresh. Instructions


1. Remove eggs that are several days old from the carton and place them into a pot in a single layer. Fill the pot with cold water so the eggs are covered by at least 1 inch of water. Leave the eggs in the pot of cold water for about five minutes. This will help to prevent cracking as the eggs boil, which can add to peeling difficulties later.


2. Bring the water to a boil gradually by turning the burner on medium-high heat.


3. Lift the pot from the burner once the water begins to boil.


4. Change the burner's setting to low and return the pot to the burner for about a minute.


5. Cover the pot and turn off the burner. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for about 15 minutes.


6. Drain the water from the pot and refill it with cold water. Add a few ice cubes to keep the water cold. Let the eggs sit in the cold water until they are completely cooled.


7. Crack the larger end of the egg first by tapping it on a hard surface. Then crack the smaller end and peel the shell away.

Spices and herbs may perform multiple duties when added to foods.


The word "seasonings" is a catch-all phrase that encompasses many natural flavorings, including herbs and spices. Spices are less likely to come from leaves of plants and are more often found in seeds, bark and roots of certain plants. Spices are almost always dried and ground into powder for later use. Preservation


Spices and seasonings became popular because of their ability to retard spoilage in certain foods. The antimicrobial activity provided by such spices and seasonings as garlic, salt and vinegar allowed food to remain edible for long periods of time before the invention of refrigeration. For example, vinegar has been used for thousands of years as a resource for pickling and preserving foods. Salt curing meats, such as bacon, jerky and fish, was the most common way of preserving meat until the turn of the 19th century.


Medicinal Benefits


Throughout history, herbs were often ground up using a mortar and pestle, mixed with salt water to form a paste and used as poultices. Some followers of alternative methods still use this method today. Once someone got the idea that the herbs and spices could provide the same benefits internally, spices were added to food. Spices and herbs may act as anti-inflammatories (cayenne pepper, cumin and thyme), antibacterials (cinnamon, garlic and peppermint) and antioxidants (peppercorns, parsley and dill weed).

In addition to adding flavor, salt slows down the fermentation process in yeast and allows bread to have structure by making dough stronger and tighter. Cream of tartar, which is a derivative of salt, is a key ingredient when making meringue for pies. Vinegar is useful when poaching eggs because, when added to the cooking water, it lowers the temperature slightly and allows the egg white to congeal faster.

The National Institute of Mental Health states that depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for people ages 15 to 44. Consequently, new medications and treatments are constantly being used to help alleviate its symptoms.


What is Depression?


According to Psychologyinfo.com, "depression is a 'whole-body' illness, involving your body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things."


What are Chia Seeds


Naturally occurring chia seeds are quickly becoming very popular in health food stores across the country. The seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids as well as amino acids.


Chia Seeds and Depression


Research has shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in chia seeds are beneficial for mood disorders including depression. Chia seeds have helped some people alleviate the symptoms of depression significantly.


Dosage


Healthy Fuel Europe states that 1 to 4 tablespoons daily of chia seeds will not only help with depression but also with digestion and hydration.


Tips

Make Biodiesel Fuel From Plants

Making your own biodiesel doesn't require you to harvest hard-to-find plants or act as a mad professor and scientifically create the fuel with expensive lab equipment. While the process of making your own biodiesel is somewhat challenging, gathering the ingredient list--consisting primarily of canola oil -- is an overall simple process. The equipment list may look long, but it's not complicated and most items can easily be found in stores or online. If you're interesting in cleaner energy sources, care about the environment, but are worried about the effects your car's emissions have on the planet, this is the perfect project for you.


Instructions


1. Put on your safety glasses, safety gloves and apron for added protection during the process of producing the biodiesel.


2. Pour all of the methanol into the blender's glass pitcher.


3. Slowly add in the sodium hydroxide on the blender's lowest setting. The reaction that will occur will produce sodium methoxide. Don't let this mixture set for any extended period or the resulting biodiesel won't be as effective. In other words, follow this recipe straight through without any long breaks in order to get the best results.


4. Mix the methanol and sodium hydroxide, still using the blender's lowest setting, until the sodium hydroxide has completely dissolved. This usually takes about five minutes.


5. Add 1 liter of vegetable oil, such as canola oil, to the mixture in the blender.


6. Blend this new mixture on low for about 30 minutes.


7. Pour the mixture into your wide-mouth glass container. The liquid will begin to separate into two layers, with the bottom being glycerin and the top being the biodiesel.


8. Allow the mixture to separate completely for two to three hours before carefully pouring off the biodiesel into a clean container to be used at your convenience.

A turkey roasting pan is a basic large pan that helps elevate the turkey from the bottom of the pan. The turkey sits approximately one to two inches above the bottom of the pan, allowing drippings to fall below, sometimes on vegetables. The pan ensures crispy skin and an even cooking time. Instructions


Prepare the Turkey


1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Check the wrapper of your turkey for its weight, and calculate the approximate cooking time based off the weight. An 8- to 12-lb. turkey should cook for 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, an 12- to 14-lb. turkey should cook for 3 hours to 3 hours 45 minutes, and a 14- to 18-lb. turkey should cook for 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes. Stuffed turkeys require a longer cooking time, so ensure that there is enough time for the turkey to cook thoroughly. A 8- to 12-lb. stuffed turkey should cook for 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes, a 12- to 14-lb. stuffed turkey should cook for 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours, and a 14- to 18-lb. stuffed turkey should cook for 4 hours to 4 hours 30 minutes.


2. Remove the giblets and neck from inside the turkey cavity. Wash the turkey cavity and the outside of the turkey. Pat dry with paper towels.


3. If stuffing the turkey, add prepared stuffing to the inside of the cavity. Add 1/2 cup of stuffing per pound of turkey. Stuffing expands during cooking, so be sure to leave ample space inside the cavity to ensure the stuffing is cooked properly. For unstuffed turkeys, proceed to next step.


4. Place the turkey breast-side up in the turkey rack. Insert the meat thermometer in the turkey's thigh. Add 1/2 cup water, if desired. Brush the skin with olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs, including rosemary or sage.


5. Cover turkey in foil and place turkey in oven. Roast turkey for determined cooking time. Remove foil one hour into the cooking to allow skin to brown. Add vegetables to the bottom of the pan at this time if desired.


6. When cooking time is complete, test the temperature of the turkey using a meat thermometer. The turkey should register as done when the internal temperature of the thigh reaches 165 degrees F. Check the temperature of the breast, wing and stuffing, if present, to ensure all sections are 165 degrees F or higher. If not, return turkey to the oven and continue cooking.

Use Pam To Season Cast Iron Grills

Iron pans are useful for several cooking techniques.


A cast-iron grill is one of the most durable and useful cooking utensils in the kitchen. Iron grills can be used in the oven or on the stove. When coated in oil, the grill becomes a nonstick surface that also resists rust and other water damage. Season a cast-iron grill with Pam cooking spray. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Wash the iron grill with hot, soapy water. This is the only time that you will use soap on your cast-iron grill. Once it is seasoned, the soap will damage the seasoning. Exposed iron will rust and give food an undesirable rusty flavor.


2. Dry the grill thoroughly with an absorbent towel. Do not use a new towel, as the iron may cause streaking on the towel. An older, soft towel works best. If you cannot get all of the water out by towel drying, heat the grill to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 3 minutes.


3. Spray Pam over the entire surface of the pan, inside and out. Spray any handles on the grill as well. Rub the Pam spray into the metal using a paper towel. Repeat this process two more times. If dirt and other grime appear on the paper towel during seasoning, continue to rub until no more grime comes off of the grill.


4. Preheat the grill to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat the grill for 1 hour. After 1 hour, turn the grill off and allow the pan to sit until it is cool to the touch. This could take up to three or four hours. This adds a protective coating.


5. Repeat the seasoning process whenever the coating starts to wear down or when rust spots appear. After every use, spray the grill with another coating of Pam spray but do not heat it.

Instructions


1. Place 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel (non-thickened), 2/3 cup of jojoba oil, 1/2 teaspoon soy wax blend and 1/2 teaspoon beeswax in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture on low heat, melting the wax and stirring the lotion with a spoon.


2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add two tablespoons of the skin care complex, two tablespoons rosewater, two tablespoons concealer powder base and 1/2 teaspoon natural color base.


3. Stir the mixture well until it is creamy. Add the essential oils and stir to mix. Allow the mixture to cool.


4. Spoon the mixture into a clear, dry container. It should last six months in a cool, dry place, or one year in the refrigerator.

Roast A Split Turkey

For small gatherings, a split (half) turkey is ideal. This recipe serves four to six people. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.


2. Rinse the turkey; pat dry with paper towels.


3. Salt and pepper the turkey on each side.


4. Stuff the breast cavity with the stuffing of your choice.


5. Place the turkey cut side down in a roasting pan.


6. Mix soy sauce and maple syrup together in a small bowl. Spread the mixture over the flesh of the turkey using a pastry brush.


7. Bake the turkey for 15 minutes.


8. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F and roast 1 hour, basting every 15 minutes with melted butter.


9. Remove turkey from oven when a thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the turkey breast registers 170 degrees F.


10. Let turkey rest 15 minutes.


11. Lift turkey from roasting pan, carve and place on a serving dish.


12. Remove any stuffing that is left in the pan and serve it as well.

Dandelion blossoms can be used to make a delicious light wine.


Dandelion wine is a variation on fruit wine that is made by combining dandelion petals with sugar, acidic juice and other ingredients. As a non-grape wine, it is a light wine choice for a meal and well suited for a summer evening. It is also a perfect way to make use of dandelions that spring up in your yard. The process of making dandelion wine requires about three weeks, including prep work, cooking time and fermentation. Instructions


1. Bring 1 gallon of water to a boil in a large pot.


2. Rinse the dandelion blossoms throughly before adding them to the boiling water.


3. Boil the dandelion blossoms for 4 minutes.


4. Remove the dandelion blossoms from the water and turn off the heat. Allow the water to cool to 90 degrees before adding the remaining ingredients.


5. Add the yeast, sugar and fruit slices to the water and stir well.


6. Pour the mixture into the fermentor and secure the fermentation lock.


7. Place in a cool area, away from sunlight for 12 to 14 days. When the mixture stops bubbling, it is ready for the next step in the process.


8. Strain the wine through cheesecloth and pour into canning jars.


9. Seal the lid on each jar of wine and store them for at least one week before drinking. As with many wines, the taste will improve the longer it ages.

It's a good idea to understand the differences between hemp seed oil and flaxseed oil before you decide which is best for your dietary needs.


Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)


Flaxseed oil has a high percentage (as much as 58 percent) of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA or Omega-3), whereas hemp seed oil averages around 20 percent. These essential fatty acids have been shown to prevent heart disease, cancer and lower overall and LDL ("bad") cholesterol.


Gamma Linolenic Acid


In his article, "Therapeutic Hemp Oil", Dr. Andrew Weil reports that hemp seed oil contains 1.7 percent gamma-linolenic acid. This polyunsaturated fatty acid stimulates hair and nail growth, improves your skin and actually reduces inflammation, whereas Omega-3s--such as linolenic acid--increase it.


Balanced Consumption


Flax seed oil has a 4:1 ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6, and may cause Omega-6 deficiencies if used for a long period of time; however, hemp seed oil contains a balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 (3 to 1 ratio), which matches the natural balance of the body, making it easiest to digest. While hemp seed oil is safe to use on its own, it's best to combine flax seed oil with other oils to ensure a better balance in your diet.


Cooking


Hemp seed oil is safe for cooking up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. When cooked at high temperatures, flaxseed oil can produce hydrogenated or refined trans-fatty acids, which are known to negatively affect cholesterol levels.


Shelf Life


Hemp seed oil is best within 8 to 12 weeks after it is opened, while flaxseed oil lasts only 2 to 4 weeks. However, Dr. James O. Hill, in an article on www.revolutionhealth.com, says adding 1,000 international units of vitamin E per pint of flaxseed oil may extend its shelf life to 2 to 3 months.

Bake A Good Turkey

Bake a Good Turkey


This is the quintessential path to baking a moist golden brown hen, stag, tom, poult, or as most commonly referred to throughout these lovely states “a turkey.” You want one that’s tender on the inside and crisp on the outside, well this is bake a good turkey. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Make sure your turkey is ready to cook. Is it fully thawed? If not put the turkey on a tray in the refrigerator and allow it to sit five hours for every lb. it weighs.


2. Preheat the oven to 325 F (163C). Remove the giblet packet from inside of the turkey, rinse the inside and outside thoroughly with cold water and then pat it dry with a paper towel.


3. Rub the entire body generously with butter and salt, and then insert a medium-sized onion inside pre-cut into four quarters. Rest the turkey breast side up in a shallow cooking pan and insert one meat thermometer in the thickest part of the thigh and the other in the breast.


4. While cooking, keep turkey on the bottom rack of the oven, and occasionally drench with melted butter. Don’t remove the turkey from the oven until the thermometer in the thigh registers 175 to 185 F (79 to 82C), and the one in the breast 160 to 165 F (71 to 74 C). Expect for the turkey to be in the oven for two and half to three hours for a small hen and four to five hours for a large one. This will mostly depend on the turkey’s original wrapper.


5. Once you have extracted your turkey from the oven, cover it with foil for about 15 to 20 minutes; then uncover, sit back and bask in the golden glow of your perfectly oven roasted hen. Carve and enjoy.

Why Is My Homemade Peppermint Bark Melting

Peppermint candies are used to garnish peppermint bark.


Peppermint bark is a wonderful holiday treat that is made from peppermint extract, peppermint candy pieces and chocolate. It can be made with white chocolate, milk chocolate and/or dark chocolate. Homemade peppermint bark makes an excellent holiday gift, just keep it chilled. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Melting


Homemade peppermint bark tends to melt if not kept chilled. While commercial peppermint bark can be kept at room temperature, homemade bark needs to be kept refrigerated. Commercial peppermint bark uses tempered chocolate to keep the chocolate shiny and prevent it from melting.


Tempering


Chocolate contains cocoa butter in the form of crystals until the chocolate is melted. Because there are many different kinds of crystals in chocolate, the tempering process causes only the highest-quality crystals to form. Tempered chocolate is darker and shinier than untempered chocolate.


Prevention/Solution


Because tempering can be a complicated and tricky procedure, it is easiest to work around that step when making homemade peppermint bark. Adding a touch of vegetable oil to your melted chocolate will cause the chocolate to have a shiny look when hardened. Vegetable oil will not keep your bark from having to be refrigerated, however.

Cooking Times For Turkey Meat

Turkey dinner


Cooking times for turkey meat will vary depending on the turkey's size. Roasting an entire turkey will take more time than roasting a smaller piece of breast meat or frying up a turkey burger. Turkey, like all meats, must be cooked to a minimal internal temperature in order to be eaten safely. The cooking time for turkey will correspond to the amount of time it takes to reach the proper temperature. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Cooking Times and Temperature


According to the USDA, turkey needs to be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey during the cooking process. When roasting a whole bird, check the temperature after one hour in a 325 degree oven. Again, cooking times will differ according to your oven, but generally an unstuffed 4 to 6 lb. bird can take a little over three hours to cook. A 20 lb. turkey can take up to five hours.


Cooking a turkey with the stuffing inside will also add to your cooking time; it is, however, recommended that stuffing be cooked outside the bird in a separate casserole dish to prevent food contamination.


A smaller piece of tenderloin that you are frying or broiling may only take 15 to 20 minutes. A 1/4 lb. turkey burger will fry up in about 10 minutes. The smaller the piece of meat, the less time it will take to cook it.


Take the Temperature


Knowing where to check the temperature is as important as doing the check in the first place. In order to get a proper reading, place the probe of the thermometer in the thickest part of the turkey breast. Don't go so deep that you hit bone or your reading won't be accurate. If you are only roasting a leg, find the thickest part of that piece of meat to get the temperature.


Proper cooking temperature


When you get the thermometer in the right place, take your reading. When it hits 165 degrees, push the probe in just slightly deeper. If the temperature starts to drop, even a little, let it cook for a few more minutes. This assures proper cooking all the way through. Pull the turkey out of the oven and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes before you start to carve. This allows the juices that have pulled into the center of the meat during the cooking process to redistribute, making carving easier. It also makes for a more tender bird.

Buying a new range can be a cook's dream come true, and getting one with a convection oven offers an added bonus. Convection ovens include a fan that circulates the area inside the baking chamber, allowing for faster and more even cooking. Does this Spark an idea?


Size And Finishes


Many convection ranges are 30 inches wide, while some may span up to 48 inches in width.


Depth on these appliances varies from 24 to 36 inches.


Stainless steel is a common finish for convection ranges, but they also come in white, black, cream and red.


What's Inside


Most convection ranges have three baking racks, while some double-oven ranges may offer four. The number of oven rack positions also varies; many ranges offer six to seven, but some have up to 13.


The capacity of ovens included with 30-inch ranges is usually 5.6 to 5.9 cubic feet. If the range has double ovens, you may get 6.4 to 6.6 feet of of capacity.


While most ovens have two heating elements (one above the food and one below), some convection ovens offer a third heating element at the back, near the convection fan.

On The Cooktop


Electric convection ranges usually have a smooth cooktop. Those that cook with gas commonly feature cast-iron grates for pots and pans, but may have "sealed" burners to keep spills from spreading across the cooking surface.


Many convection ranges have four or five cooking elements, ranging in size from six to 12 inches. Some elements offer the ability to accommodate a six-, nine- or 12-inch pot, only heating the portion of the element needed to warm the pot you select. Large ranges may have up to eight burners on the cooktop.


Some convection ranges include an element designed to quickly bring water to a boil. Others include a griddle that can fit over a center burner to provide a flat cooking surface. Some range knobs are dishwasher safe.


Cooking Power and Special Features


Convection ranges are either gas, electric or a combination of the two. Combination ranges usually use gas for the cooktop and electricity to power the oven.


Some less-common features available on convection ranges include the Sabbath mode, which maintains temperatures in compliance with kosher cooking rules.


The ability to program the oven to cook or clean itself at a later time is also available on some models, as is a 12-hour auto shutoff feature and a warming drawer. At least one model offers special settings for slow cooking and for pizza preparation.


Prices And Warranty


Most convection ranges offer one-year warranties on parts and labor. At least one higher-end model offers a limited parts warranty of up to 10 years.


Prices for convection ranges vary depending on their sizes and features. Models with a 30-inch width start at around $765 and increase in price to $5,700. Purchasing a 36- or 40-inch convection range sets you back $1,900 to $7,200. A 48-inch model may cost as much as $9,000. 3. Stir well and let sit for two minutes.


Stovetop Instructions


4. Boil 1 cup of water and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan.


5. Add 1/2 cup of Quaker Oatmeal to the boiling water.


6. Reduce heat to medium-low and let the oatmeal cook for about five minutes, stirring occasionally. This will make a single serving of oatmeal.

If you are tired of your cold cereal or want something hot for a cold morning, Quaker Oats may provide a solution. Quaker Oats is an oatmeal breakfast cereal available in a variety of flavors and types, and usually served hot. Instructions


Old fashion oats on stovetop


1. Pour the water and salt into the saucepan. Place the pan on a stove-top and bring the water to a boil.


2. Stir the oats into the pan. Reduce the pan to medium heat. Cook the oats for five minutes, stirring them occasionally.


3. Remove the oats from the heat and pour them into a bowl. Add toppings of your choice and serve.

4. Pour the water, salt and oats into the microwaveable bowl.


5. Place the bowl in the microwave. Turn it on high for three minutes.


6. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Stir the oats and add your toppings.

Recover Vegetable Oil Waste

You can use old vegetable oil as a means of alternative energy, but finding a good supply of vegetable oil can be a little more challenging, depending on your location. Using vegetable oil to power a vehicle is very cost effective and eco-friendly. This type of fuel is called biodiesel. In fact, you would be doing your oil supplier a favor by taking old, dirty oil off his hands. Disposing of used vegetable oil is a big concern because of the amount of garbage it creates each day.


Instructions


1. Go around to the smaller restaurants in your area and ask to speak with the manager about taking some of his used vegetable oil. Make sure it is not mixed with animal fat. Give him your reason for taking it and let him know it would benefit him because he would not have to pay to dispose of it. Also mention that reusing vegetable oil is environmentally friendly.


2. Find empty gallon jugs and other large containers to hold your used vegetable oil, and pump the oil out of the supplier's barrel. It helps to stack the jugs into crates or boxes to keep them from falling over in your vehicle. Strike up an agreement with the restaurant supplier to collect oil every week or so and arrive on time for pickup.


3. When you put the jugs into your vehicle, pack them into big crates or boxes to keep them from falling over and making a mess. Using bungee cords or other restraints are a good way to keep the jugs secure.

Some patients have experienced skin side effects when adding rice bran oil to the bath as a treatment for dermatitis and other skin rashes due to the presence of the straw itch mite in the supplement. This pest is not found in all rice bran oil products, but it does have the potential to cause skin irritation, itching and redness.


Complications


Rice bran oil lowers the amount of blood calcium in the body, making it useful for the prevention of kidney stones; however, this function of rice bran oil also makes the supplement dangerous for people with osteoporosis or a condition called hypocalcemia, a type of calcium deficiency. In addition, patients with anemia, intestinal ulcers or conditions that cause difficulty swallowing or digestion also may find their conditions exacerbated by rice bran oil.

Although these numbers may vary for each person, offering balanced meals is the way to encourage good family nutrition. It may feel like no small task to feed a large family healthy and balanced meals on a budget, but planning ahead is the key to success.


Determine the Budget


Determine your weekly grocery budget as the first step in the process. Make sure this number is compatible with your overall household budget as well as realistic when taking into consideration your family's size and nutritional needs. Fruits and vegetables are more expensive than chips and cookies, so if you are going to prioritize healthy meals for your large family, it is critical that you allow enough room in the budget to buy healthy ingredients for meals as well as snacks. Once this number has been determined, commit to taking no more than this amount of cash to the grocery store each week, and avoid using credit or debit cards to supplement your cash supply.


Plan Ahead


Plan ahead before going to the grocery store each week by setting aside time to browse for coupons in your newspaper or online. Integrate leftovers into weekly meals. When cooking for a large family, it may be difficult to predict how much the family will eat on any given day. This can leave you with extra food to be forgotten in the refrigerator. Instead of allowing this waste to undermine your food budget, keep track of what foods are prepared and uneaten in the refrigerator, and incorporate them into meal plans for the following days. For example, if you have leftover meatloaf and mashed potatoes from last night's supper, store them in the front of the refrigerator and use them the following afternoon to make meatloaf sandwiches on thick slices of wheat bread with ketchup or tomato sauce.

Use Coconut In A Raw Diet

Raw-foods diets have been increasing in popularity. In a raw-foods diet, you eat only raw, uncooked whole foods or foods that have been heated no more than 112 degrees. Coconuts are particularly popular parts of the raw-food diet because they are easy to eat uncooked and are high in fiber, vitamins and essential nutrients. Instructions


1. Cut open the coconut. Don't try to cut around the top of the coconut in a circle, like you would a pumpkin. Cut four lines through the top in the shape of a square---this is easier to do. You may need to do this more than once to get through the top.


2. Open the lid. Use a knife or a spoon to pry the lid off if necessary. The coconut may be filled to the top with coconut water, so be careful when you open it that you don't spill any.


3. Pour out all the water into your container. You can use a bowl or a large glass or cup. The amount of water in the coconut will vary, but in general your container should be large enough to hold 3 or more cups of water.


4. Scoop the meat from the inside of the coconut using your spoon. The meat inside of raw Thai coconuts is soft, so any sturdy metal spoon should be able to get the job done.


5. Place your coconut meat into another container.


6. Add the coconut water and coconut meat to your blender.


7. Blend the two together until you have a smooth milk.


8. Store your milk in a pitcher, jar or other resealable container.

Baste A Turkey

Holiday turkeys are a menu tradition going back centuries. Modern cooks prepare turkey in a variety of ways including roasting, deep frying and smoking. While cooks generally agree that it is not necessary to baste a roast turkey, many still maintain that basting adds flavor to the skin and a beautiful color to the turkey. Instructions


1. Roast the turkey according to recipe instructions.


2. Check the turkey 30 to 45 minutes prior to completion. If basting with pan juices, have a bulb turkey baster ready. If basting with melted butter or oil, have a basting brush available.


3. Pull out the oven shelf on which the turkey is roasting.


4. Coat the exterior of the turkey with the basting liquid, using the appropriate utensil. Move quickly so as not to excessively interrupt the cooking temperature. Once the turkey is completely covered in liquid, place the turkey back in the oven.

What Documents Do You Need When Getting Food Stamps

You must present certain documents when getting food stamps to prove that you qualify for assistance. When you pick up your application for food stamps, ask for a list of required documents. Every applicant must submit certain documents, but due to your individual circumstances, you might need additional documents. If you don't have any of the necessary documents or don't know get them, ask for assistance at the food stamps office. Trained staff will assist you.


Proof of Identity


You need proof of your identity, such as a state issued identification card, a driver's license or a passport. If you do not have those, ask the staff at the food stamps office if other documents will suffice.


Proof of Residency


You need proof of your home address. Present documents such as a driver's license with your current address on it or a copy of your lease or a utility bill sent to your current address.


Proof of All Household Income


You need proof of all household income. You must present documents such as paycheck stubs, a disability award letter, child support receipts or a bank statement showing deposits from Social Security. You need proof of income from everyone in your household that receives money. If your income changes at any time while you are receiving food stamps, you must present proof of that change. For instance, if you lose your job or start a new job, present a letter from your employer or a copy of a new paycheck stub.


Proof of Assets


You need proof of assets owned by you or others in your household. You must present documents like bank account statements showing how much money you have in the bank or a written statement saying how much cash you have on hand. You do not need to present a car title or the title to your home if you own a car or house but you may need to present documents related to other property you own.


Proof of Living Expenses


You need proof of living expenses such as how much you pay for rent and utilities. You must present documents like a copy of your lease or a letter from your landlord, a copy of a recent electric bill and a copy of a recent gas bill. Ask the staff at the food stamps office if you should bring proof of any other expenses.

Use Proportion In Decorating

Proportion means that everything is to scale.


Proportion has to do with the relative size of a room, the furnishings in it, and how they relate to one another. Many times, you can simply look at a design and tell if something looks too large or too small for the space. That's because your eye is naturally drawn to spaces in which everything works together, nothing is visually jarring, and the design seems purposeful. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Measure the room. Once you know the dimensions, use one of the many free online virtual room planners. They will allow you to choose from a variety of virtual furnishings to "test" within the dimensions of your room. For instance, if you place a 7-foot sofa in a 10-foot room, you'll find that the proportion is off. If you place an apartment-size sofa in a large great room, you'll see that it's not to scale. An online room planner will also help you decide where you're going to place furniture before you do any heavy lifting.


2. Move furniture when needed. Designing a room to scale sometimes means you don't have furniture that fits properly in a room. It may be that a little creative switching will help. For instance, if you're decorating a small den that holds a large armoire and a large bedroom with a chest of drawers, consider a trade. The armoire could be used in the bedroom to hold clothes and the chest will work as a television stand and storage for music and DVDs. That large gilded mirror that's too large for the guest room may fit perfectly in the great room.


3. Study the windows. While there are exceptions to the decorating rule, windows are normally built proportionally to the room they're in. That's because architects and builders know that proper proportion is important. If proportion and scale is at all confusing to you, windows can help you understand how proportion gives a room balance.


4. Balance the furniture in the room. If you have a sofa in one area, balance it with something like two easy chairs or a large piece of artwork on the opposite wall. A great room with a large fireplace hearth needs balance across the room. This may be an architectural detail like a large picture window or a piece of furniture or art.


5. Vary the height of your furnishings. Imagine a room in which all the lamps, bookcases and art are the same height. It would look boring and static. When you vary the height of your furnishings, you break up the monotony. Wall art is a good way to vary height and give the room an instant lift.


6. Attend to window treatments. Oversized drapes in a tiny room will look out of balance, as will a pair of cafe curtains in a grand room. Like all other furnishings in the room, window treatments should fit the scale of the space.

Making your own homemade natural makeup for your lips can be a fun, inexpensive way to accentuate your face with your own personally tailored creations. Although most homemade natural lip ingredients are easily assimilated by the body, be sure to use ingredients that you do not have a known allergy to, and be certain to discard any homemade makeup products that cause you any discomfort. Beet Red Lip Gloss


Submerge beets in boiling water for 20 seconds. Slightly cool and peel them, then use a juicer to extract the beet juice and set aside. Melt ¼ cup beeswax in the top of a double boiler, remove from heat and add in two tablespoons sesame oil, ¼ cup Castor oil, one tablespoon of flavored powdered juice mix, enough beet juice to attain your desired color and a few drops of your favorite essential oil, if desired, for fragrance. Mix well and store in covered jars (Reference 1).


Cranberry Lip Balm


Microwave one tablespoon sweet almond oil, one teaspoon honey, one drop of vitamin E oil and 10 fresh cranberries until just boiling. Mix well while gently crushing the berries. Let cool. Strain until all fruit pieces are removed. Stir mixture and let cool completely before transferring to a covered tin or plastic container (Reference 1).


Orange Apricot and Beet Red Lip Gloss


Melt one teaspoon beeswax in the microwave or top of a double boiler. Stir thoroughly, then remove from heat. Stir in one teaspoon calendula oil and one teaspoon apricot kernel oil. Add beet juice until desired color is achieved. Allow to come to room temperature, and then add three to four drops of orange oil. Stir thoroughly and store in covered jar (Reference 2).


Shea Butter Lip Balm


Place one tablespoon olive oil, one teaspoon beeswax and one teaspoon shea butter into the top of a double boiler. Melt over low heat, stirring until wax is thoroughly melted. Pour into container and set aside until mixture cools (Reference 1).

Why Is Olive Oil Used As A Soap

Olive oil use has been dated as far back as 3500 B.C., and not all of it has been for eating. It is believed that ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians used olive oil as a form of soap. Olive oil soap making has evolved over the centuries to add lye and essential oils to the process. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, is antimicrobial and is a natural emollient. These three properties make it a natural choice for soap. Does this Spark an idea?

The History


In ancient Egypt olive oil was applied to the skin and scraped off to remove dirt and debris. Mesopotamians are credited for creating the first olive oil-based soap by mixing soda ash with olive oil into cakes. In 1792, a French chemist regulated the process used to create olive oil soap, leading to the soaps being called Marseilles soap. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Greece was the major exporter of olive oil and olive oil-based soaps.


Functions


Olive oil soap suds rinse off the body very easily and can replace shampoos and shaving cream. The olive oil also provides vitamins for the skin, kills germs and moisturizes the skin.


Antioxidant Benefits


The polyphenols in olive oils protect against oxidative stress. These polyphenols also assist in reducing free radicals related to sun-based skin damage. By using olive oil soap made with 100 percent extra virgin olive oil, it can theoretically help to prevent skin cancers. Olive oil also contains vitamin E, vitamin K and essential fatty acids, which are beneficial to the body overall. Vitamin E helps with natural collagen production for the skin. Vitamin K is used in treatments for spider veins and dark under eye circles.


Antimicrobial Benefits


The polyphenols present in olive oil have shown a resistance to salmonella, cholera, staphylococcus, pseudomonas, and influenza in vitro. According to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the polyphenols in olive oil "have been demonstrated to inhibit or delay the rate of growth of a range of bacteria and fungi." When used in soap, these antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal benefits are passed on to the user.


Emollient Benefits


An emollient provides a moisturizing element to the skin. The oil components in an olive oil soap add these moisturizing benefits to the skin. These emollient properties make olive oil-based soap good for shaving and does not dry out the skin afterward. The oil does not clog the pores when used as a moisturizer and provides just the right amount of moisture to prevent inflammation and eruptions on the skin. Make Jelly Beans

Jelly beans are believed to be the modern version of a delicacy called Turkish Delight dating back to biblical times. The jellybean came into existence in France, during the 18th century. They are associated with Easter because their egg-like shape symbolizes new birth. The gourmet type is softer, smaller and contains fewer calories. Given the unlimited variety of flavors, it's surprising confectioners are continuously creating and testing new ones.


Instructions


1. Experiment with various chemicals and natural flavors to develop a new flavor. The new flavor is then presented at a critique session consisting of everyone from production workers to CEO's. If it is approved it is test-marketed and then introduced to the open market, if popular.


2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, anti-foaming elements (such as wax), color, flavor and various other ingredients in a vat. Boil until the syrup reaches the desired consistency.


3. Transport the mixture through pipes to the casting area. Casting trays contain molds that shape the jellybeans. There may be up to 1,200 molds per tray. Before the syrup is poured into the molds the trays are coated with cornstarch, which enables the cooled centers to retain their shape. The jelly beans are left to cool overnight.


4. Steam the jellybeans to remove the cornstarch, then add a sugar coating and set aside for 1 to 2 days.


5. Place the jellybeans in a rotating drum and gradually add sugar to build up the shell. They are set aside for 4 to 6 days until shells are hard enough to go back in the tumbler for polishing, and then glazed for a glossy look.


6. Send test samples of new flavors to the public. If the flavor is popular with the public it then becomes a new product.

Directions For Making One Serving Of Cream Of Wheat

Add fresh fruit as a topping to Cream of Wheat.


The "stick to your bones" hot cereal is a filling and nutritional breakfast food that you can make in minimal time. Cream of Wheat, manufactured by B&G Foods, offers low saturated fat and low cholesterol while providing an excellent source of Vitamin A, as reported by Self Nutrition Data. You can use water or milk as the liquid sources to make Cream of Wheat. Water will create a thinner consistency, while milk will create a more creamy hot cereal. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


Stove Top Directions


1. Pour the water or milk and salt into a 1-quart sauce pan. If you are using water, bring the water to a boil. Once the milk starts to boil, reduce to medium heat.


2. Slowly stir in Cream of Wheat. Continuously stir it during the cooking period to avoid clumping.


3. Reduce the heat to a low boil and cook 1 1/2 minutes or until thick and creamy. Remove from heat promptly when finished to avoid burning the Cream of Wheat.


Microwave Directions


4. Pour 3/4 cup of cold water or milk into a large microwave-safe bowl. Add 3 tbsp of Cream of Wheat and a dash of salt. Stir to mix the liquid and Cream of Wheat.


5. Place the bowl into the microwave and cook on high for one minute. Remove from the microwave and stir.


6. Place the bowl back into the microwave, and cook an additional one to two minutes; stirring every 30 seconds. The Cream of Wheat should be thick and creamy when finished.

Owners should be aware of what goes in their dog's food dish.


Dog owners often assume that anything a dog will eat must be safe for it or the dog would not eat it. This is not the case. Dogs have a habit of eating just about anything, safe or not. Some foods can make dogs severely ill or even cause death in a canine.


Manufactured Dog Food


Most dog foods are safe for canines to eat. The best brands have all the nutrients dogs need to be healthy. Nonetheless, dog food, like human food, can contain contaminants and dogs can die of food poisoning from dog food. Substitute Brown Rice For White In Rice Pudding

Don't limit yourself to thinking rice pudding must be made with white rice.


Rice pudding is a sweet dish that is most often made with white rice. Rice pudding made with brown white substituted for the white will add extra nutrition and give the pudding a richer, nuttier taste. The remainder of the ingredients used in your favorite rice pudding recipe will remain the same. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Measure the amount of brown rice equivalent to the amount of white rice called for in the recipe. For instance, if the recipe calls for 1 cup of white rice, measure 1 cup of brown rice.


2. Bring 3 to 3 1/2 cups of milk or half-and-half to a boil in a saucepan. Pour in the brown rice and stir. Place a lid on the saucepan.


3. Turn the heat under the saucepan down to low and let the rice cook for 1 hour.


4. Lift the lid and quickly stir in the remaining ingredients of the rice pudding recipe. Replace the lid.


5. Allow the rice pudding to continue to cook on low for another 1/2 to 1 hour without removing the lid. Stir and add additional milk to enhance the creaminess of the pudding, if desired. Serve at room temperature or cold.

Going vegan doesn't just mean eating lettuce!


"Vegan" (vee-gun) can be a confusing word. It's a noun: "I am a vegan", a verb: "I'm going vegan" or adjective: "Is that a vegan dish?" But it's not really complicated. A person adopts a vegan lifestyle by avoiding all animal products not only in his diet, but also in his closet, medicine cabinet and choice of cosmetics. Make that Change


1. Educate yourself on what is really in the foods you eat and how they are made, and deciding to make the change to go vegan won't be hard at all. You'll be in good company. According to a 2009 poll by the Vegetarian Resource Group, 3% of Americans are vegetarians, and 1% are vegans. That's an estimated 6 to 8 million Americans. Learning about where your foods come from, watching videos of how factory-farmed animals live, and talking with your doctor about your overall health are all great ways to keep motivated.


2. Try going vegetarian or vegan for just one day a week at first. Plan on having Veg-Out Fridays or Meat Free Mondays and make the transition slowly. You can build from there. Going vegetarian, which means you can still eat cheese, eggs and milk, is easier for some people than giving up all their favorite foods at once. Once you're eating a plant-based diet, you'll feel lighter and healthier, and weight loss is almost a guarantee.


3. Hamburgers made with soy-based patties are lower in fat than the real thing.

Olive oil has medicinal as well as culinary uses.


Extra virgin olive oil is taken from the first press of the olive. Olive oil, especially the extra virgin variety, is a large part of the Mediterranean diet, which is linked to good health and longevity. There are known medicinal uses for extra virgin olive oil. For some of these, you can substitute regular olive oil, but extra virgin is of higher quality and may be more effective.


Cholesterol


Extra virgin olive oil is full of monounsaturated fats and polyphenol antioxidants. These fats and antioxidants can reduce the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your bloodstream. LDL cholesterol is a harmful cholesterol that can lead to heart disease. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consuming two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil each day may lessen your chances of developing coronary heart disease.


Alzheimer's Disease


Extra virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal, which is a naturally occurring chemical that can protect brain cells. A study carried out by Dr. Jason Pitt, Northwestern University, found that nerve cells exposed to oleocanthal extracted from olive oil were protected from neurotoxins responsible for brain damage and Alzheimer's disease. Doctors and scientists may attempt to utilize this medicinal property of extra virgin olive oil to create effective new medications to treat Alzheimer's.


Ear Wax


You can use extra virgin olive oil to soften and remove excess ear wax. The University of Nottingham Health Service recommends using olive oil as an alternative treatment if your ears are blocked by ear wax. Put a few drops of extra virgin olive oil in the blocked ear two to four times a day for two weeks. This should soften and eliminate the wax.


Burns


You can use extra virgin olive oil to soothe minor skin burns. Hold the burned area under cold water for five to 10 minutes. After this, apply olive oil to the wound. The oil will soothe the burn and protect it from further infection. Putting extra virgin olive oil on your burn may even help the burn heal more quickly. If the burn looks serious and the skin is more than just red, however, you should consult a doctor.

Color Jelly Beans

Coloring jelly beans is process similar to coloring Easter eggs.


Jelly beans offer a sweet treat in a variety of flavors from bubble gum to popcorn. You can correlate the flavor of jelly beans with matching colors, such as pink for bubble gum and yellow for popcorn. Jellybeans promote a vibrant presentation for Easter baskets and candy bowls and can be used to decorate the frosting of cakes and cupcakes. You can complete an Easter or arts and crafts edible project by mixing different color food dyes to dip jelly beans in, as you would Easter eggs. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Purchase a package of assorted food coloring and disposable paper bowls. Cover your work surface with newspapers to prevent a mess.


2. Set each bowl up to contain a different color of food coloring. Squeeze different color drops of food coloring into each bowl.


3. Create lighter hues by adding white or yellow food coloring and darker hues by adding black, purple or blue food coloring. Make colors more vibrant by adding more drops of food coloring.


4. Place jelly beans in each bowl and swirl the bowl around so that all sides of the jellybeans are coated in food coloring.


5. Remove jellybeans from the food dye with a spoon when the desired color is reached. Allow them to dry on parchment paper for about 10 minutes.


6. Dip a tooth brush into food coloring and splatter the jellybeans with a contrasting color by running your finger over the bristles, if desired.

Though not located in Burlington, the Franklin County State Airport is only 29 miles up the road, 3 miles west of Highgate. This airport caters to charter and private planes, but offers these additional services: flight instruction, fuel (Avgas---used only in piston engine airplanes), U.S. Customs with advance notice, hanger space and more. The lounge, briefing room and restrooms accommodate all guests.

Only 34 miles out of Burlington, Franklin County State Airport is just 3 miles west of Barre. This airport is intended for private planes, but does provide services such as flight instruction, plane rental and fuel: Jet A, a kerosene-based fuel used in most turbine-engine jets, and Avgas, which is an aviation gasoline used only in piston engine airplanes. The amenities include an on-site restaurant, public telephone, restrooms and transportation. One of the runways is not plowed in the winter months, but the airport is open year-round.
